Track key question

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but I'm clearly un-educated on the subject. I know the track key for the new Boss 302's is basically a tune in the embedded chip but, judging by the rougher idle, it sounds like it adjusts something with the cam. Is this accurate and, if so, how does a program alter the cam? Thanks to anyone who can help me understand!

It has variable cam timing. It's an adjustment. When I tuned my 08 GT it sounded different. That's the magic of VCT.
