The Ten Worst Special Edition Ford Mustangs

The Ford Mustang has been an essential part of the automotive world for forty-eight years. Not every one of those ponycars was exactly a classic, though. These are Jalopnik readers' picks for the ten worst Mustang special editions or trims.

Yeah, I would have to say their readers are talking out of their butts on some of those. The '79 pace car looks no more silly than any other pace car and it sounds like they are oblivious to the original California Special (a great special edition in its own right), the (loose) inspiration for the current models. They aren't meant to be "homages" to California car culture.
The concept of a "luxury" Mustang originated with the Grande. The Ghia was just a continuation of that theme.
The Mustang is a lot of things to a lot of people and its annoying to me that if it isn't a fire breathing performance model, it's not a "respectable" special edition.

.The Grande was not a bad car, let alone a bad Mustang. My first car was a 70 Mach 1....though I had one hell of a time finding one ( in 1974 ). Before I finally found my Mach 1, I nearly bought a 70 Grande...which in hindsight, I think I would have enjoyed only slightly less than the Mach 1.

I would have to agree with you and kindly disagree with some of Jalopnik's voters.

I thought the 1979 Pace Car was beautiful at the time. Something about the pewter paint, Michelin TRX tires with tri-spoke wheels and those Recaro seats gave that car a sophistication.

Reminds me of the commercial "sweet handling car... Mustang II... Can we build on for you. The only Mustang II that I like was driven by Farrah Fawcett on Charlie's Angles. Lol.

One of the 10 worst? Really? We totally love our wonderful 2007 California Special 5-SD and it gets a lot of family love from the other Mustang owners at the area car shows!! Just because you think, believe and say something, does not make that the real truth for all of us Stang Fans. Just saying... "RC"

The Grande' was not even a "special edition". It was a regular production model with luxury trim that anyone could order. I really liked the Grande's. They never got gaudy with a padded vinyl roof, pillow tufted interior and wire wheel covers. I thought they were quite tasteful with the non-padded partial vinyl roof, woodgrain interior trim and higher styled vinyl seats.

Have to agree on the 1979 Pace Car Addition Mustang. Thought the paint combination and extras looked darn pretty hot at the time! Love the hood design and black out below the belt line. Just wish that FoMoCo would have made this car with their hottest 5.0 engine and tranny package as a street version option. This would have been a pretty sweet combo. "RC"
P.S. Just did web research and found out that they were also made with available 302 V-8 4-speeds. "A Very Cool Looking Mustang After All"!!
