Crashing would be a lot worst. You might like to consider a radar detector.

Sorry man, that stinks, but it's a risk you take. I advise against the detectors, the first day I ever had one was the first ticket I got. I got rid of the detector the next day... false sence of security, probably wouldn't have helped much w/ Laser anyway. At 95mph, you've got a lot of slowing down to do to get you out of a ticket. Actually, I'm surprised they didn't take your car and/or license. I thougt they could beyond 25mph over the posted limit. As said... pay up. Sorry though.

i just got pulled over just about 25 min ago, first time in the new pony. 63 in a 45. Told the cop that my clutch was stickin and i wasnt payin attention to how fast I was really going. He said, "as a professional curtousy to your uncle for being a captain, I'm gonna give you a ticket for obstruction of view. Slow it down, and have a nice night, walks 3 steps, turns back and says, by the way, Nice Mustang!" i got the thumbs up by a cop! Sweet!! Nice Lumberton Twp. Cop....

I thought all traffic violations were misdemeanors. Its the reckless driving that gets you into the felony stage.
They CAN take you to jail for doing 25mph over... actually they can take you to jail for doing 5mph over. It all depends on the manner in which you were driving. If you were playing Ricky Racer, you will get hauled in. Tagged with reckless, endangerment, willfull disregard of speed laws, all kinds of charges. If your on an open road, no traffic, and your simply speeding, you get basic speed. Sometimes you can get Basic Speed, and get off. It depends on the code, I forget what it is now, but it basically states that you were speeding, however you were dong so safely and not endangering others.
any LEOs around to confirm this, or tell me I am full of bologna?

If a driving course is offered in your state in lieu of points, it might be worth to consider as an option to avoid an insurance rate increase or cancellation. The fine would be the same amount plus the driving school fee but it beats going to court and risk facing a judge which might not be sympathetic to you endangering innocent bystanders. The state trooper is likely to be present and would not help you any. 40 mph over the posted limit is considered excessive. The trooper was within his discretion to impound your car and have your next meal served behind bars. You should count your blessings.

Everyone that is quoting "they can do this and that": remember, laws vary by state, and even counties. Here in CT, you can be doing 135 in a 35 and you'll get a big ticket, but thats it. No pulling of the license, no going to jail, nothing.
Other randomness:
- having a radar detector would do more good than harm. There are situations where it won't help, but there are far more where it will. Anyone that tells you differently needs to go down to the dollar store and buy a clue.
- Both people who are saying "it should have been worse" are from FL, notoriously one of the worst states for speeding. Both of you should keep in mind it is not as bad everywhere.
- Going to court over it will not always get your charges dropped if the officer doesn't show. 40mph over the speed limit and the judge may just say "don't waste my time, pay the fine." (not in those words, but you get the gist of it)
- I would not hire a lawyer over this, if it was 10-20 mph you would have a chance at making a difference, but at 40 mph you are in trouble.
- Don't do the crime if you can't pay the fine.

I'm pretty sure traffic violations are called Civil Infractions, not misdemeanors. Misdemeanors don't sound like much, but they're actually pretty serious, unless you're on trial for a felony, then plea bargain for the misdemeanor if you can, lol. Anyway, all my tickets from my youth said "Civil Infraction" the misdemeanor and felony boxes were not checked off for speeding, failure to stop, etc.
