shifter replacement auto trans
Has anyone replaced the shifter on their autoamtic transmission mustang?
My shifter has the metal peeling from the top of the shifter. I ordered another stock shifter (about 90$) and I think I will change it out myself if I can find some directions. I have changed out standard shifters, this should be easier, maybe.
Thanks
I found a lot online about replacing the entire shifter, and one post on another forum about replacing the handle. After reading that one, it seems that you should be able to use a screwdriver to pry down the lower chrome piece to expose the bolts that connect it. The person who posted this cut the wires an put a shift ball in place of the stock handle. I am not going in that direction.
I think there should be a place where the overdrive/hill button wires can be unplugged so you can just remove the old handle and unplug it, then replace the handle and plug the new one in.
Has anyone done this?

ugh
I tried to do this myself. Pry down the chrome piece at the bottom and remove the two torque's screws. The shifter handle was free to come off except for the overdrive/hill button wires. They were connected below the shifter console (the thingy with P R D 3 2 1 on it) and I tried to get that off but failed. I will not cut them.
Should be a simple operation to remove that but without knowing how to release it, seems that it would be easy to break it. It is only thin plastic.
So unless I find the way to remove that part or someone here knows how to do it, I will get the dealer to do it for me.
I must be retarded, I can't even figure out to use these smilies LOL.

Maybe not, just realized you're having trouble with the actual handle, not the trim piece around the handle. Check the 10-14 interior section - there's a couple of ex-Ford engineers that frequent the section and might be able to pull up the diagram for you.

yes it did, once I pried the whole enchilada up I could get to the overdrive/hill wiring plug and unplug it. I scratched my arm on something sharp on the console though. pretty tight fit getting my hand in there.
