So after over 6 years I've finally paid off my customized black 06 GT and being that it's back to being a daily driver, and no near term options for getting a second car as a DD, I'm seriously considering selling in order to get something with better gas mileage and automatic.

My problem is that I know there's no way I'll recoup my investment in all the mods, but I am wondering what you all think is fair market value for my car? She has 75K miles on her and drives like a champ with no mechanical issues.

You are exactly where I was recently. You will never get the money back that you put into it. The mileage is high. (respectfully) It's a great feeling to pay a car off. I remember when the title to my old stang came in the mail. I jumped for joy,

Keep the car as your fun car, let her rest, put a cover on her, and take her out on weekends.

Also consider the new V6 mustang for its price, pep and great gas mileage. Do t worry about haters on the v6.

 

Thing is, I have my daughter's student loans kicking in in January, so what I paid monthly for the car now will go to loans. I don't have extra $ for a car on top of that, thus my predicament.

Then I would lease a beater car until your daughter gets on her feet having recently graduated. You'll save money in gas and apply the savings to an affordable lease. Plus your not stuck with the car when things change.

Or find a private buyer for your mustang. That's the more painful option but a dealership will crook you.

 

if you really have to get rid of the car your best bet is to return it too stock and sell the mods separately. Takes extra effort but I see thousands of dollars in mods that you could recoupe doing that.

 

Swap those 4.10s out for something alot more conservative. You have a wide range of gear ratios available with the 8.8 and with some proper fuel economy driver improvement mods the gas penalty can be corrected.

and if your using a tune that requires premium fuel, going back to an 87 octane tune can produce some savings as well.

I was able to produce some worthwhile improvements in economy with my old 07 GT (factory 3.55 gears) by altering my driving habits. As much as 9 mpg as I recall.

Frankly if you really like your stang and your going to be dropping cash on your daughter's school loans, you will be kicking yourself in the *** every time you see another Mustang.

 

I have been enjoying no car or lease payments for about 2 years now. You should try it for a while and see how you like it. As stated above there's several things you can do to improve your mpg's. There's a sale on alum driveshafts right now, going back to a 87 tune, swaping out gears, slow take offs and coasting to stop signs/stop lights.
If money is going to be tight adding a lease payment for a few mpg's I would think you would be better off staying with the stang. I think you will come out ahead $ wise. Silly idea maybe drop your ins to just liability and save a few more bucks that way.

 

I'd still shoot for a 90 buck a month disposable gas sipper car lease. Remember that your stang has 75k on her.

I picked up a 95 civic, under $1000 and the body is rust free, straight. I have some SMALL plans for that but that 1.5L will get 30 in the city and 45+ highway. I have a nice cover for the 5.0 and it sits, I bring it out on nice days and put some miles on it. It is wonderful to have a "daily" and I am 22 so speaking for me it SAVES me money, not at first but I will. I dropped the mustang as my "primary" vehicle and listed it as a "fun" car and saved me almost $50 a month to list it as second and cost me $42 to insure the honda, coupled with the fuel mileage I will make my money back.

Is there no way you can keep her as a weekend toy and pick up a beater to get you to work and back?

I'm lucky enough that my current daily driver is an e46 BMW 330i, but for 18mths my daily driver was a £500 Ford Mondeo Mk1 (I believe you guys knew it as the Mercury Mystique?). I did 35,000 miles in that old thing and all it cost me was petrol money and 2 tyres. I sold it for £300!
