If true, I'd guess that the next gen sheds some weight to compete (or beat) the Camaro. I bet it would be hard to put the current S550 on a diet, other than an all aluminum body. It also would indicate that we'll be checking Camaro taillights until then... I guess that is only fair, they've been nice enough to check ours since the 2011 Coyote came out.

Maybe preparing for the 2025 CAFE rules?

That's what I'm thinking. In fact I'll be surprised if the next generation Mustang has a V8 option.

I hope that isnt the case. Although a twin turbo v6 would be nice, like the new GT.

I just hope they change the front end design that is currently on the car. Not a fan.

They can & probably will change the front end a bit most years up til then. Till then you can find an aftermarket front end mod to your liking.

I think you're wrong about that. Ford is getting pretty serious about fuel economy in most of their vehicles, as well, they're pushing hybrids and I believe they're planning a whole slew of electric vehicles, so their CAFE numbers should be pretty respectable by 2021. Now, we might not get a 5.0L V8, but Ford knows better than to take the V8 out of the Mustang.

Depends on the take rate in the F/E-series, when that dries up you'll see the V8 become a niche player

I think it's because the S550 turned out ugly as sin, and top brass mandated a more aesthetically pleasing redesign sooner. Plus the GT350 now competes with a 1LE which is $10k less. Once the Z28 and ZL1 are out that will be bad news. Back to the drawing board.

I keep hearing how "ugly" the new ones are...then usually hear a report about how they are selling like hotcakes.

Everyone else doesn't seem to mind the looks.

As a general rule a new sports coupe will always sell pretty well in the first couple of years regardless. The FR-S, for instance, sold really well the first two years and then sales fell of a cliff. By the time Scion shut down they were lucky to sell 1200 FR-S a month. I'm not saying that will happen to the Mustang but the fact is that there are a lot of people out there who really don't like the look of the new car. I like everything about it except the front end which to me is just ugly as can be. It's just bad symmetry across the whole front end. Ford seems to be committed to having vehicles with ugly front ends. The new F150 sells well but the front end is hideous.

Let's hope Ford puts this fat-äss on a diet, and restores the weight balance! I thought my '96 Cobra was heavy.

I'd be willing to put some of the weight back on in the form of a retractable hardtop though.

And I agree about the new front end; it's way too bulbous. The back end, though, is a huge improvement to the abysmal, slipshod efforts of the last several years.

Yeah something down around Alpha would be really good! Although most of that extra weight is what allows the S-197 and later cars to run into the 10's without a cage since they don't wad up like the earlier cars.

Back in December a kid hit me head on and we were both going about 35 when I had my 2015 GT, they carried him away in an ambulance after they cut him out of his 07 Civic. My passenger and I walked away and I only suffered a few dislocated ribs and a dislocated vertebrae although the car was totaled as it had bent the chassis pretty bad and broke the engine and transmission mounts.
