Mustang International Shipping

Hello everybody,

I'm from Detroit, but I've been living in Japan for almost ten years now... This past March my father was killed in a motorcycle accident and it's been really hard on my family.

My wife and I are thinking about moving back to Michigan next year to take care of my mom. However, I have a 2011 Mustang GT here that I'd hate to leave behind...

I just wonder if anybody has experience with shipping a car internationally? It seems there are a lot of companies, but they mostly deal with JDM. If somebody has a reccomendation on a company or information on the process, I'd really appreciate it!

Best thing to do is check with the locals on your end -- most issues happen at point of origin. When you do find a good carrier and if you ship by container, request that you be there when its loaded and secured in the can.

I worked at the airport for a Ground Handling company and we shipped jet aircraft engine assemblies, rare cars (Aston Martin) and F1 cars overseas. and some of the loaders are, well... not so nice and caring as you would expect.

make sure you insure your shipment, no matter how much it costs -- things can happen when they are moved from place to place, and Japan is a long ways from Michigan

Cheers and good luck!!

Shipped mine from FL to Germany, went with a company that the dealer recommended. Container shipping is better, but also more expensive. I have shipped cars to/from Germany and Hawaii without any real issues.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm really on the fence about what to do. I could sell my 2011 in Japan and it would fetch a really high price. Then I could buy a 2013 in America with change to spare. The 2013 is really nice, but I'm not a huge fan of the new front. I'd prefer a 2012, but finding one I want might be hard...

If I brought my 2011 home, I'd probably lose money on it in the long run, but man... I love that car.

I sold my '05 when I left Hawaii for Germany. Didn't want to pay the shipping cost and pretty much broke even. Two years later I bought the Boss and couldn't be happier! Would be tempted to sell it before I left if I was offered the right amount, but would be real hard to get rid of!
