If you have lowered your Mustang such as I have, you probably have noticed that it is tough getting the floor jack under the car. Just 1½” further up off the ground will allow you to get under your car just like it was some garden-variety piece of Detroit Iron. A quick way to make a set of four Mini-ramps is to get an eight foot 2”x12”, cut it in half, then bevel-cut the halves into two-foot sections, each with a single 45-degree cut. Nail 2”x6”s as a stopper on the end of each Mini-ramp, and you’re done.

now boys, play nice.

Brian. I do the same thing, I just didn't bother nailing stops at the end.

There was a post here a whle back using the same premise. Except it continued on as a ramp to get the car up in the air.

Ya. I am going to be building a set of those this spring. It will make working on the car a lot easier, but the ramps will take up a lot of room.

Hi TTU4.6,
After seeing your comment above, I initially assumed that you were suffering from a classic case of "Wing Envy". I have received comments from a few insecure individuals in the past feeling somehow inadequate after reviewing my man-sized appendage. After reviewing your 4 posts to date, it seems like you haven't received your Mustang at all, so perhaps I should be more sympathetic to your plight, as you are not just envious, but totally lacking.

P.S. to Dustin,
It seems like your avatar has been eating “whatever that stuff is” for over 2,400 posts. Perhaps by now, you’re full of it?

P.P.S. to Gordon,
I appreciate your kind PM to me regarding the initial post.

Gearhead, im so envious of your "custom" wing that I cant hardly control myself. In fact, when I get my car next month I will be putting not one but 2 of these wings on my car. I cant decide if im going to stack them one on top of another, or put one in front of the other one. Im so excited that im going to go watch Fast and the Furious.

No seriously, its your car so dont let my comments get you riled up. Im just saying that Im used to seeing stuff like that on civics and integras. Other than the wing I like your car.

Well, I have to admit that I've been a lot "testie" lately about the subject.

The good thing about the wing I have is that it is functional in doing what it is designed to do, and that is to provide down-force with a minimum of drag. When the air gap between the deck lid and the wing is closer than what I have, you are in turbulent flow, and the wing cannot function as a wing. Rather, it just becomes a source of drag in the turbulent airflow. The stock "winglett" on the Mustang is a decorative piece at best, and certainly is non-functional. When Bi-wings are used, they remove the space for laminar airflow, also negating their purpose.

The truth of all of these aero body pieces is that only two types really can provide a worthwhile function, and that is a forward air dam under the front bumper and a rear wing. By taking them over the top (stylistically) with Bi-wings, Tri-wings, ad nauseam, one no longer can claim a functional advantage. I actually do agree with you’re distaste for doing it wrong in the too large direction, but I also feel too small to be almost as ridiculous.

If I didn't have the wing that I do, I would go with the bare trunk lid. Functionality will be in style longer than useless decoration.

How do you know how much down force it is creating or if it is creating any at all. Why do you feel the need for additional force over the rear tires. Road Racing or Auto-X? Just curious.

If I WERE to travel at 120 MPH, it would be a great thing to have. The down-force has to be an aero calculation with a laminar flow assumption. There is no real way to measure it on the car. At the pedestrian speed of only 60 MPH, this wing calculates out with a very small down-force of 24 Lbm. The folks at 3D Carbon really did design a nice cord shape, and remember that this is an upside-down flight surface (note that because of this, a very shallow angle of attack is more than adequate). The good thing is that the drag is only 1/10 of whatever down-force is generated. Practically, at the speeds that I'll ever drive this thing, it won't be a factor unless I'm doing something stupid like traveling over 100 MPH.

So, why have it even though it only functional at speeds that I'll never use? I guess I just like the “looks” of going fast. Note that it does have two "bonus features" that work at any speed, and they are:
1.) It perfectly blocks out the headlights of trucks that follow me (at my age, my night vision isn't what it used to be).
2.) It gives me a great visual reference to know where the rear end of the car is when backing-up. The back edge of the wing is about 8" away from the bumper, as the side winglets are also 8" from the side fenders.

Maybe you should stack 3 of the wings on top of each other, get a leather flying helmet so you could look the the RED BARON.

Curse you, Captain Glen Brown of the Royal Air Force! If I had seen you coming first, you would have been #81.
