If ford benched the mustang for 7 years?
If ford benched the mustang for 7 years?
Ever wonder what would happen if ford sat the mustang down for close to a decade and brought it back, besides it being devastating? Would production be able to keep up with the demand?

You have to assess that the Mustang makes up a decent percentage of Ford's overall market. I know I've read a lot of opinions that when the S197 launched it sure brought a TON of people through the door to purchase a Mustang. If Ford only built a sports car to battle the Corvette but used the Mustang to platform future upgrade plans for it, I think maybe the Mustang would appeal to more people?
Ford isn't exactly setting the mark with power and performance but more-so playing catch-up. When the 302, 351, and 429 engines were designed and released, people sought those out but not many non-pro Ford guys that I know of are talking about the Coyotes that I read on or hear. I still catch GM guys around here talking about the terminator cobras and the 13 GT500 because of the power those things came with.

I never knew that! I learn something new everyday. This is one of the reasons i joined this forum...... To learn about these cars! I consider myself a mustang fanatic, and due to certain circumstances is the only reason i currently do not own one............ YET!!!
Didn't that happen with the Mustang II lol.
But the Mustang was almost killed off in favor for the for the Ford Probe.
Ford nearly killed it off: In the late 1980s, Ford toyed with the notion of killing off the Mustang in favor of the Mazda-based sporty car the Ford Probe. Mustang fans became incensed at the notion of a Japanese-engineered front wheel-drive car with no V-8 option replacing their beloved Mustang. Fortunately for all of us who worship the 2005 redesign of the Mustang and all of the wonderful variants that it has spawned, it didn’t happen.

Im just now getting back into them as well, my last dtang was a 92 gt, had it for about 6 months and it seemed like once i added a mod to it then something would break. To make a long story short i fixed the broken valve spring and sold it because i didnt have the money for the up keep on it. That is why im saving and will purchase a new pony that i can enjoy instead of turning wrenches all the time
I hear you man. I know wrenching sucks sometimes. I had a friend ruin it for me when he wanted me to fix his mustang all the time. When I had my race car to work on myself. I stopped that by starting to charge him to work on it lol. But I love just being able to get into a car and drive away. I have had my Lightning since 2003 and have done very little wrenching on it. Only the past 2 years has the up keep been getting more and more. But it's all stuff I decide to replace before I got strainded on the road some place. I have 108,000 miles on it now, And at 100,000 miles I decided to change Fuel pumps, The whole suspension, And Hurt the transmission last year. That was the only thing I really needed to change. Everything else was working fine.

Keep in mind that the Probe was originally intended to be called Mustang and it was in fact hastily renamed Probe after it was decided to keep the then current Mustang in the lineup. That article is incorrectly written misleading everyone to believe that the Mustang in name was to be killed off. In the late 1980's everyone was talking about killing off rear wheel drive cars, including the Camaro and Firebird which had nearly fully developed GM-80 front wheel drive prototypes running around. The decision to keep the RWD Mustang sent GM into a tizzy to abandon the heavily invested GM-80 project and redesign the F-body chassis with updated designs for 1993.
Also a short time before the Probe ever showed up, there was a concept Mustang created based on the production Mustang that featured a wraparound rear window like the one that showed up on the Probe. I cannot seem to locate a picture of it at the moment but I do remember it had a dark brown metallic paint.
