Okay, I don't mean to offend anyone, but one of the things that's causing me to pause about buying a this Mustang convertible is, not am I too old now (36) but will I be too old for the car if I plan on keeping it until it dies?

I don't like buying cars, so I get them with the intention of keeping it until the paint has worn away on the hood, putting a metal box on the trunk isn't an issue and enjoying the fact the car's been paid off for years and it is all mine.

Granted, the car could be stolen or get into an accident (it's never happened to me, so I don't really think in those terms) but I generally think keeping a car until it dies is right.

So how old is too old for this car? There's nothing endearing about a 75 year old man in a Corvette, or a 60 year old woman in a Jeep Wrangler. So how old is too old for this Mustang.

A strange question, I know, but this issue and the idea that the insurance is $1,000 a year more ($3,000 total but I'm in NJ) than it is on my Honda S2000 are the two things stopping me from buying it.

You're as old as you feel. Period.

 

 

You say there is nothing endearing about an older person driving a corvette, or any type of sports car. This sounds like you are worried about how people will view you when you get older and still have the car. You know what? You shouldn't care about how people view you when you get older and are still driving the mustang. Life is too short to go around worried about what others think. Do whatever makes you happy.

 

I'm 58 and can't wait to get my car. The few GT's that I have seen in my area were all being driven by 40+ youngsters!

i dont really think there is a rule on how old you can be for a car. just you wiat, ill be 89 someday and ill still be drivin my mustang (as soon as i get it that is). you're never too old if you think you've "still got it"

trade that honda! :P trust me, you'll love an 05 V6

I agree with the majority of the posts in this thread. If you want it, buy it. Quit caring about what other people think, most of them already have their minds made up anyway. You only live once, you might as well enjoy it.

As one of my favorite sayings goes:

"When you reach the end of your life, the point is not to arrive looking rested and refined, but to arrive out of breath, sliding in sideways saying, "Man, what a ride!'"

 

I also agree age should never matter. Like others have said, buy what you like and enjoy life.

In late 1984 I bought a white Monte Carlo SS(85) when I was 24. I still have the car today and I am 44 and see no difference in how "I look in it". The car only became a daily work car a few months ago when I bought the Mustang.

Mustang is a Mineral Grey V6 and I love driving it. The car has been rock solid since picking it up 2 days before Christmas. In the past I have owned a Nova SS, Mustang LX 5.0(89), and a chevette and regal as my winter cars when I lived in CT.

In AZ, especially in my area, rust is not a problem and some guys and gals have had cars for over 30 years because the bodies stay great. One lady I work with has a jeep she bought in college(U of A) and she still has it 25 years latter and still drops the top and lets the wind blow through her hair, now gray, not brown! She feels the jeep brings back memories of her youth. The SS does the same for me. It is all about the joy of driving and having a car that costs only $25 a month to insure and not having a car payment since 1988 is just a perk.

So I might have the Mustang and SS into my 60's and all I can say is WOOHOO!!!!!

The day I picked up my Mustang from the dealership I saw my first '05 sighting on the road. It was a blue-haired lady behind the wheel... she looked 70-75... cruising along in her windveil blue GT coupe. "Wow" I thought as I flipped her the thumbs up (which she didn't see).

So the wife and I went to our first meeting of the local mustang club and, sure enough, there's the windveil sitting there. The wife and I got to talking to the owners after the meeting and the first question out of the lady was, "What mods have you done?". Yea, grandma!! You go girl! Her husband jumps in telling me about the mods he's going to do on their car and their both so excited. I closed my eyes and I swear I was talking to a couple teenagers. They were giddy!

Very cool people. The club is almost all older folks (I'm 39 btw). They strike me as former hot rodders who've settled on Mustang and, it seems, most of them do their own wrenching on their cars.

Mustang is cool at ALL ages.

 

You've convinced me. I'm not going to worry about it. I think I'm just gonna buy it. I loved my last Mustang and I've missed it.

Okay, by this time next week, I should have an order into Detroit.

I'm 48 with two mustangs. My father was 64 when he bought his camaro. My mother was 60 when she bought her camaro. Too old? Never.

Back in 1983 I Was Driving A Tow Truck Hauling Insurance Totals to the Storage Facility 50 mIles Away on A Regular Basis. The Other Driver Came in After a Run to the Local Ford Dealer. He Said They Offered Him a Job at the Parts Counter. He Was Not Interested. I could Have Let The Conversation Go in One and Out The Other Ear. I thought I Would Like That So I Applied For It! It Was Like $3.00 an Hour Better Pay! I was Ecstatic!

Think the OP was worried about growing old with his new Mustang in 2005 when he posted at 36? What a joke... Heck, I was 47 in 2005 when my first S197 was delivered at the dealership... 18 years later, I am now 65, go figure!

 

Too old?

My first mustang was a new 1965 HiPro 289 4 speed fastback. Rare at the time. I was 18 years old. Had to have my dad co-sign
Second was a new 1969 GT fastback. Also, a little rare. I was 22 at the time. First new purchase without a co-signer.
Third is a 2005 S197 Premium convertible. Bought a few months ago. I was 75 at the time.

I might look too old and no longer attract the pretty young ladies when I drive by. But, I still get to look and it makes ME feel good. And that's what keeps me young! ..... Jim
