I've seen foxes sell lately for a lot more than that at auction. Whole collection of ultra low mile foxes and the numbers just keep going up for pristine examples especially. Wish I had all of mine back now lol

What great memories foxes like this bring back. On my 11th Mustang and 7 of them were fox body, including my 93 Cobra (so
many regrets for selling).Since fox meant Mustang for so long, I walked away from a good deal on a 22 GT. It felt like driving a
Buick compared to what I was used to. I finally came around to accepting that this is a natural progression, and ended up with
my current 22 GT, which I love.

The key is 'wanting' this particular car with it's color and anything else associated with it. If it's a 'dream machine' that you missed out on when drooling over these cars in 1987, then hell yeah, $42k is fine.
To the average Mustang lover, $42k seems too high to me. I can only use my own 8,800 miles GT I bought last summer for a price in the low $30's as an example. I would buy another one of mine at $10k less than an '87 every day of the week. Yeah, mine is 27 years newer but there's the word 'want' again. I personally don't want it at that price point but someone else might..For a fun cruise-in car and taking to shows, etc.. I'd consider at $26,000 - $27,000 or so.
In a similar category last year, was a 'new' 2002 Trans Am WS6 in a very desirable color. It had under 1,000 miles (another time capsule) and never sold sold for an asking price in the mid $40's. Collector Editions and unusual models do sell for those prices and higher, especially at auctions when people go nuts, but I'm just using a typical model as an example.

I previously owned a total of 3 Fox body Mustangs, prior to purchasing my first S197 GT back in 2005... My last Fox body was a "93" SVT Cobra which I should have held onto, but due to being limited of only having a single one-car garage, I was not able to keep both Mustangs... Therefore, in the end, I made the very difficult decision to part with the "93" SVT Cobra in favor of the 2005 S197 GT... Needless to say, I still miss the "93" Cobra even to this very day, as I enjoyed many great years and never had a major issue with it... The only part that required replacing was the smog pump, but other than that, all the original parts remained in place with the exception of the cat-back exhaust which was upgraded to Flowmaster American Thunder...

Regarding the 42k asking price for the Fox body GT above... Unless the vehicle is a special/limited edition such as the "93" SVT Cobra, I would not feel comfortable in paying 42k for any mass-produced Fox body model, regardless of condition or low mileage... In my honest opinion, the most I would feel comfortable in paying for a low mileage/pristine condition Fox body LX or GT model would be no more than 25k-30k at the max.

^^^ BIG RED ALARM anytime the Carfax has an issue (yet I know mistakes can be made by them) and the description says 'odometer shows xxx miles'. Hard pass, no thanks. Also the tires are 16 years old and makes you wonder what else has been neglected. Perhaps the top too? Those 80's verts are very poorly made compared to the 90's and beyond. Leaking can be a real problem.

Getting back to the original post, here is a car from the same era and what it brought at a big auction house. It is in the latest issue of Hemmings Sept 2023.
I personally feel the IROC is a bit more unique than the '87 GT but it still gives you an idea on value. It's about $5,000 under the asking price of the Mustang.
