Fear of Leaving the Stable......

Just expressing my thoughts.

So I currently own a 2012 base gt auto performance white, which I ve had for a couple of years now. Before that I owned a 2004 mustang v6 auto, which I owned for 8 years (first car). I love fun, sporty, performance cars in general, but of course my first love was a mustang. The reason I owned my first mustang so long was because up to about 2 years ago I wasn't able to afford my own car. Anyways what I m getting to is that I have been tempted recently to leave the stable to see what else is out there. Dont get me wrong I will always love mustangs and i probably will own another one in the future, but i m curious to get the feel of a european car, another muscle car, maybe a fun sporty 4cl turbo car, or even a truck. Although I fear of making one of the above decisions and regretting or missing my pony too soon.

Anyone ever share these thoughts? Acted upon them? Did you regret it? Did you enjoy it? Please share ur experiences? What vehicles have you owned? What were your experiences with them either before or after a pony?

Sry so long!

I wanted a Mustang since back when kids prevented it (practicality). Got a 2010 V6 and loved it... traded into a '12 GT and LOVED it. Traded that for the V6 Challenger I'm in now, and only the occasional twinge of regret when I see a 'special' Mustang on the road. There's plenty of Mustangs out there if you decide you have to go back.

i think u need to explore few options... hertz rental has adrenaline collection, where u can rent diff muscle car options.. it would give u a feel how its like to own one... i would recomend it over a test drive.

Really, I did not know that. I will definitely look into that. This is something I have always considered doing. A few months back my car was in the shop over the weekend and got a 2013 f150 5.0 and really enjoyed having a truck. Thats when I considered maybe owning one, but i would like to know how the ecoboost compares. I also have considered a challenger r/t, although I would prefer a srt8, they are just too expensive.

How was the trade off from a 5.0 to a v6 challenger, was it hard to get use too? Although I ve heard that the challenger is quiet roomy and comfortable for a sports car

If you get a truck I bet you will miss your Mustang within months. If you get a similar 'sporty' car you may be fine. I have been 'in and out' of Mustangs since 1982. Never really missed one since I owned comparable cars, but even then it seems you find your way back into one eventually. I'm on Mustang #3 personally. The only cars I have enjoyed for longer periods of time are the Pontiac F-bodies which I have had in my garage for the past 17+ years starting with a new '96 Formula off the showroom floor, and now with my '01 Trans Am. European cars are a blast to drive but horribly expensive to maintain and the cost gets old after a few years of ownership. I've owned a 1988 Merkur Xr4ti (bought it new at the Mercury dealer), a 1995 Porsche 911 and a 2002 BMW Z3. Superb driving machines and just a different feel. I'm sure you would enjoy a European car, especially German, but keep that cost thing in your mind. When you tire of it, THEN you can come back into the Mustang fold. It's fun to explore different rides.
It's funny I just posted about BMW's on another thread, and as you can see, the German cars are now gone from my garage, just the T/A remains.
Good luck with your decision!

Hey, it's your money-- spend it on whatever you want; it's no skin off anyone's nose except, possibly, yours. But what cars do you really expect to have recommended to you on a Mustang forum other than oh, maybe Mustangs?

I know everyone on here shares a passion for mustangs, but thats not to say that mustangs are their only passions. The majority of the people here are also enthusiasts of fun, fast, and cool looking vehicles. I was just expressing a thought I had and was curious to here what other people thought about the topic, as well as, share their stories.

So anyways after giving it some thought I have really been leaning back towards where I was right before purchasing my current pony. At that particular time, I really wanted a fun, fast, sporty sedan. Originally I wanted a G8 GT, but couldn't find any "fairly" new ones in my area at the time. Then I looked into the new refreshed chargers, which I really liked. After finally test driving one, the only thing I didn't like so much was the lack of sound and feel of a muscle car. I know these new chargers aren't the muscle cars they were from back in the 60/70s, but I guess at the time I really still wanted that muscle car sound and feel.

So now I am considering either a charger (still not sure on the engine choice) or a challenger r/t. The reason I m not sure on the engine choice in the charger is because the sxt plus v6 with blacktop package is a nice well equipped package for the price and gets 31mpg highway. Its like sporty, still fun with 300hp, premium, and can carry 4 adults. The charger r/t is of course still all that but with about the same mpg as my current pony and not as peppy. The challenger of course is still a sports car coupe, so that one has to have a v8.

just wondering what your price range would be for a new or used car. Are you leaning more towards a new car? That would help us find other ideas for possible rides for you.

From what I have read/heard the RT aren't that much worse on MPG's than the 6er's as far as the mopars go. Is that what you have been seeing?

Well I would really prefer something new and in the 30s, but of course if I go with something like a r/t then its closer to 35K. Recently I read that the new charger v6's now have an 8 speed automatic, which gives it 31 mpg on the highway. I think before then the r/t and v6 had close to the same mpg. Which is why I am not considering possibly a sxt plus v6 with the blacktop package. I have also recently driven a jetta gli with twin-clutch automatic pusing 210hp and 200+ tq. Now of course that vehicle is on another spectrum, but it is a quiet fun, sporty, dd sedan. It has a 0-60 in the mid 5s with launch control and all at only 25Kish without all the fancy packages.

.
I test drove a hemi Charger in January '12 so I doubt they changed very much. I felt they were really disconnected compared to a Mustang. Not only that, but it felt HUGE! Why, I have no idea, but I was very disappointed because I liked the looks and thought I would enjoy owning one. Didn't you get that feel as well? That's probably what you meant talking about the 'feel'. No, it is not similar to the original '60's '70's Chargers at all. I had a '71 Roadrunner. No comparison. Maybe it was the 4 doors? Something was off.

I had an '06 GT premium from June of '09 to October '12. I traded it on a 2010 Challenger R/T classic. The challenger was much more comfortable, sound system was better, ride quality was much better, trunk space was better, and it was fully loaded with nav and leather and sunroof etc. Very comfortable car, but it FELT heavy, and the aftermarket for it was very limited compared to the mustang, and I just didn't feel right in it. I didn't feel connected to it, like I could make it my own.....8 months later, I traded the challenger for a brand new '14 GT premium. Every now and again, I'll miss certain things about the challenger, but hey, I love mustangs, I've always felt like my mustangs were an extension of me. Hope this helps you in someway.

I used to have a 2007 BMW 328 coupe. I honestly regret getting rid of that car. Sure my 2012 GT is a lot faster and I've done a lot of mods to it and made it my own and I sure do love driving it and is very nice for the money. But every time I see a BMW coupe on the road a little part of me is sad that I don't have it anymore. I've put too much time and effort into this car to trade it for anything. I'll drive it until the wheels fall off. But my next car after this will be a BMW M3 of some sort. The mustang is a wonderful car. But there was something about the BMW that was just, I don't know, more special.

Back a few months ago when I was looking to buy a new car, I drove all three of the major American sport's cars, Mustang GT, Camaro SS, and Challenger R/T. The Mustang felt the quickest, with the Camaro 2nd and the Challenger last.

The Challenger does have plenty of power though and is bigger inside, rides better, and has a bigger trunk compared to the Mustang or Camaro.

I think the Mustang is the best bang for the buck and since I didn't want all of the fancy leather or electrical options, the base Mustang GT with an automatic filled the bill for me. I couldn't get anything comparable on the Challenger which was my other main choice. The most basic Challenger R/T Classic with automatic in the color I wanted without most of the stuff I didn't want, still stickered for over $36,000 while my Mustang stickered for $32,740.

Like others have suggested, go rent some of the cars you are interested if you can or go test drive them and see what you think.

Thanks guys I really enjoy hearing ur opinions, experiences, and thoughts. I went by the dodge dealership today to look at and try to test drive the charger sxt plus v6 with blacktop package. Unfortunately I didnt get to test drive it because the salesman wouldnt shut up about what i was planning to trade in, what kinda of numbers was I looking for, etc. :-/

Anyways so a good buddy of mine came into town today who shares the same passion for mustangs and fast cars as I do, I told him about what I was thinking about and showed him the car I went to look at. He first said that it was very nice looking, but then said something that really made me think about it. I was like, "yea it has a 8speed auto, gets 31mpg on highway, and still has 300hp,etc." he then says,"and can you live with that?" (Referring to being a v6). It was almost like a slap to the face, like, wake up and realize that once you ve felt the power of v8, there s no going back lol.

tell the dealers that you have no trade in and a decent down payment. that you want to test drive a car. If you like the car get the price from him for said car. When the price is all set then ask him what he will give you for your trade in.

I have had good luck not telling them anything. When I bought mine, I just walked in and told them I want to test drive one. When they asked questions I tell them nothing. If they are not going to let you test drive the car why be in business. Also a reminder check and see if your employer or a family member works for a company that participates in the corporate supplier discounts. My company does because we supply capitol equipment to many sub contractors who build the parts for all car companies. I checked and was able to get "x-plan" pricing for my mustang. Special website and everything when putting all the options together. Saved me over 3k and then was able to add Ford factory 2k discount.

I found a brand new 2013 gt premium with the 19" machined/black wheels and the accessories package . 31K with xplan. I m going to wait till after the reveal of the new mustang on dec. 5th to make a decision on either another pony or diff. car, if I do end up liking the new mustang then I ll probably custom order one or try and get my hands on a 50 anniversary edition.
