Personally I don't like having the gun so prominent. I like it sight unseen and unobtrusive. I always keep it under the seat. If it doesn't fit there, then the glove box. It's a personal decision. Some gun owners want it 'out there'.
Just remember though, if the gun is in somewhat plain view, and if ever pulled over, the first words out of your mouth after 'Hello officer" should be "I have a firearms permit". You don't need a gun shoved in your face if you don't say anything. This happens, especially late night when the scumbags come out of the woodwork. Safety is always first. That's another reason why I like the gun concealed. No one needs to know and you won't be asked 99% of the time for a routine traffic offense. I never made it a part of my routine (for basic traffic stops) to ask unless the driver or passenger were acting 'different'. It's up to you and what you are comfortable with as a first line of defense. Let's face it, that's why we are armed. Protection.

Dang Dave, that's what I was gonna say. I usually keep my detective special under the seat, between the seat rail and transmission wall.

Someone should make a mount to put it in the Soave between the seat and the console just next to the seat belt holster. That way if you ever get car jacked, you just act normal like "lemme get the seat belt off", then wham! Right at the fingertips and doesn't raise any alarms.

I say keep it on you! Undo the seatbelt with left hand while grabbing gun off right hip with right hand. How do you carry when not in your car?

In South Carolina, the law is the handgun must be in a console, glovebox or trunk (closed compartment). I can get to it much quicker in my console than I can wearing it on my hip with a seatbelt buckled.

I have a IWB holster I carry it in, When I drive my jeep, I have it in my console, which is much easier to get to then the console in the mustang, because of my drivers seat position. I just wanted to see what other people were doing in the mustang.

I, too, recommend you keep it on you as you normally carry it. It is immediately available and you're less likely to leave it behind by mistake when you leave the car.

Also, train on drawing and reloading from the seated position as part of your practice routines.

That works extremely well.

I prefer to keep it on me but no way to quickly access IWB or pocketed while in the seat. I am 6'4" and can barely get my wallet out of pocket at drive through windows. Mine is usualy in console or between seat and console. If I am visiting a dangerous area I will have one on me and another in easy reach in the car.

Shoulder rig? If you spend a lot of time in your car, it may be worth considering.

Cross draw may be the best (for a right-hander) in a vehicle; I don't know what a lefty would prefer.

Or do like some celebrities and politicians: hire a couple armed guards to escort you to the venue where you will speak out against guns in the hands of "average" citizens.

This is another option. You can place Velcro in your vehicles bag move the holster to the vehicle you are driving. There is also a bedside option.

Since you have an IWB you could shift it to cross-draw. That's a little more comfortable while sitting, especially if your a big guy like ghjr.

In an emergency I always reach for where I always keep it. It's a bummer when it's not there! If there's a moment to think about "danger, gun, shoot" then you should drive off or get out of the vehicle, fast! You don't want to open fire with a serious caliber while inside a vehicle...believe me!

As others mentioned, IWB on my right hip just doesn't work in the Mustang, between the seatbelt and the side bolsters. (It works fine in my pickup...)

As for crossdraw with your regular holster, that doesn't work well if you have a holster set up for the "FBI carry" angled forward. A shoulder holster is really the way to go in a vehicle, imo.

In OH, the law states that the firearm must either be on your person, or inside a container where a latch must be operated to get access to it. In the console, glove box or gun case (does not have to be locked). In-between the seat and console, or holstered "on" the car somewhere is illegal.
