I used to drive from FL to GA every weekend and gnats were a huge problem!! Make sure you buy some nice spray that will help you remove the bugs. Also wash it often to keep the bugs from setting in. A clay bar is also handy for removing our little friends!

WD 40 also works to remove TAR that may get on your car from newly paved roads.... works GREAT!

peanut butter....
ok not really but i have heard it suggested for removing gum from carpet and getting wax off of black plastic trim, so it has just become the joke that peanut butter fixes everything on your car.

Would WD-40 do anything to the paint? or is it proven to be pretty safe?

Ive spoken to a guy I know who use to have a body shop, he has told me before that WD 40 is the best. My neice just bought a 2005 white Altima --- she went to show a friend of hers and had to travel down a newly paved street. She had tar all over the car! She was bringing it to a body shop, when I just happened to call her and tell her about the wd 40. She went back home and tried it... came right off, no problems with the paint.
I guess it would be safe to test a small amount in a spot that would not be noticeable if you are concerned --- always best to be safe then sorry.
