I've bought and shipped both. The tires have always been 'bare' and no issues. The rims I've sold I have had boxed by the local UPS store. It costs me some $$ but it gets to the destination with no problems, and they are insured if something goes wrong. My last set of rims (a mint Mercedes set) cost me $125 to have them boxed and shipped to AZ from here in NC about 2 years ago. It's probably a bit higher now but gives you a general idea.
