BAMA CAM NOISE....?

I have the BAMA CAM installed on my car with the 93 race tune. At idle I have noticed a knocking sound coming from the lower half of the engine and can be heard best while laying under the car. I am working with the BAMA team on this issue and also a stalling issue. Does anyone have any ideas what the noise may be? Once again it only happens during idle...

25bduse,

That does seem strange, since you're only experiencing the knocking at idle. Have you checked to see if there's anything loose? The rough engine idle could cause a loose component to be knocking as the motor rocks back and forth.

Is there any chance you could post up a quick video of the knocking and where it comes from? I know it's hard to describe the location sometimes.

Keep me updated if Bama comes out with a solution, too!

Next time I fire up my car I will attempt a video from my phone, but the quality may suck.

Here is a short video of the sound. As you will hear it sputters and then jumps into a "bad lope" with some sort of knock. It does it worse when the A/C is on. Please HELP because if it was not for this, the BAMACAM would sound awesome.

Defiantly sounds like a knock coming from your engine has to do with the tune I would take the cammed tune off right away before you damage the cylinders. Then once you have up loaded the regular tune check idle again. Could also be that the cam phasers are out of sync do to tune also.

It shouldn't have as long as you didn't run it like that for a while. But I would definitely go ahead and put the regular Bama race tune on in the mean time.

Only my street tune doesn't have cam idle. I'm not driving it until AM / BAMA replies. If they don't get back with me before tomorrow I'll put my street tune in.

They should have given you a street, race and cam race tune or performance. 3 tunes in all.

Have Bama rewrite your tunes with out the cam in it. They can do that for you. Just contact them the same way you would for a tune update.

I am waiting to see if they can iron the BAMA CAM out since I love the sound. They told me it sounds like clutch chatter, but the street tune is in right now w/o the bama cam and it runs awesome. Can hardly tell its running.

OP,

Thanks for getting back to me with a video posted up! That makes it a lot easier to diagnoise the situation.

I can say it definitely doesn't sound like an engine knock. The sound it too high pitched and echo'y to be an engine knock. To me the sound does seem the pressure plate is chattering inside the clutch. Which also makes sense why you only have the issue at idle and with the Cam tune.

With a rough idling engine (Bama Cam tune), your whole drivetrain is vibrating much more violently than normal. If there's any extra play in your clutch assembly, you'll certainly hear it with a consistent rough shaking motion. Once the RPM's rise, rotational momentum takes over and the pressure plate finds a resting position. This is why it goes away and only occurs at idle.

The regular Street or Stock tune idles much smoother and has a lot less vibration. It's just not enough to chatter the clutch assembly side to side.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the extra play for now as long as your clutch feels okay. If the sound picks up with your regular Bama tune running, then it may be time to take a look or replace it. Otherwise, I would continue to use this clutch and until you feel more failure symptoms.

Would the clutch cause the sputter and bad idle as seen in video?

The slight idle serge is just the nature of the Cam tune. The idle won't be perfect and sometimes catches itself now and then, just like any radical aftermarket camshafts. What makes the Cam tune sound cool, is not necessarily efficient for an engine. Instead, it's lowering the engines dynamic compression from a longer valve over lap, which make finding the desired idle a more difficult task.

Hope this helps clear things up. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

Efficiency is not that big of a deal since it sounds awesome, but does it damage the engine? Im waiting for mike to finish up the revision so I can put the tune back in. The only reason I am asking about the serge is because it is always follows by the "chatter".

Also, shouldn't the chatter stop when the clutch it pressed?
