I am looking into buying a Mustang and have always thought that a stick was the way to go, but a friend who races Mustangs told me that automatics are quicker off the line, plus you don't have to worry about burning up the transmission. Any thoughts on which is better?

i'd go stick. Funner on all occasions. Racing or not. Traffic or no traffic. For me at least. Plus double clutch downshifts are super fun to do, and sound awesome. Autos shift faster than any man can but there is a small amount of power loss.
Either way its really up to you. Just make sure you think about it, because if you choose automatic you may regret it. B) :drive:

For fun on the run i would always go with a stick shift. It varies by transmission but some autos drain upwards of 30 hp to operate. But for all out racing ... automatic cars do break less and are more consistent. There easier on the axle too.

I prefer stick (My current Capri, and Mach are 5-speeds)

However, I had a 1986 Capri 5.0 that had a shift kit, and a B&M 'slap-shifter' and it was extremely fun, except when going around a corner in first gear under heavy acceleration and having the rear-end skip out from under me because of the strong-firm shift into second.

what are you looking to do with the car?

will it be a daily driver/cruiser with the occassionaly trip to the dragstrip? go 5spd.

ifyou're going to build it and bracket race every weekend, auto is more consistent.

B) When you drive for handling, vs off the blocks speed, you will want the stick. Nothing beats downshifting into a nice curve, with the top down and hearing the engine echo off of the surroundings. :worship: :worship: :drive:

How about at 1:00pm in the afternoon on an empty stretch of road by the Ocean in Cali?

I-800 totally sucks throughout the weekdays (at least everytime I get on it, it seems) ... (my main reason for not even getting a stick)

Another is I cant drive one well enough... (DOH) Only drove my brothers Plymouth Lazer a couple times...

Well, if your battery dies, you can always push start it with a stick and catch it in gear. Just make sure you park on a hill.

Well, once you master it to the point you dont evevn think about it (second nature) Then you will love it. Maybe practicing before you get it will get you into loving stick, and never wanting to go back.

You could always just shift the auto like a stick...
You still have somewhat control over when it shifts, but you don't have to deal with the pains of a stick in traffic. Just no clutch.
Or you can do like me friend did...He wants a stick so bad that he took a coke bottle, stuck it in his cup holder, and pretends he has a stick. lol
