Wink Age 45 & older ! Post what ya drove in the 60's/ 70's

Just a trip down memory lane now that I'm driving a Stang again, gotta see what we all had (& maybe regret selling/boneyarding/wrecking) back in the day.

1st) 1968 Olds Delta 88 4D hardtop in black/black. Loaded, no leather. 425 Rocket V8: yes this was my father's Olds. Grabby brakes. Terminal engine fire 1973.

2nd) 1968 Mustang GT cvt in Highland green/blk vinyl interior/blk top. PS/PDB, 390/ 4 speed. From Florida, found for $500 locally. Kinda rusty, bad valve guides, but could do 55mph in 1st, 2nd 75, 3rd past 100, dunno the top of 4th: suspension too soft/scarey. Blew up tranny, tore off oil pan street racin', had enough of prem fuel thirst, jam shifted it to boneyard late '75. Worth 30K now, fixed & rightous. oh well.

3rd) 1974 Toyota Celica GT in Green/white vinyl int. 18RC wheezer 4 cyl/5MT. $3500/new. Great on gas, but oh how the mighty have fallen. Gas crisis in full song, so had to do it. Sold in 1979 with 130K and seriously rusty (body pans pulling apart...oh look that's the road down there) to a guy for $300 bux and a signed statement acknowledging car's abyssmal fitness of purpose.

4th) 1979 Toyota HiLux 4x4 shortbed pickup in white/blue cloth&vinyl int. $5000/used. 20RC still-a-wheezer 4cyl/4 speed. Bought this truck in Colorado and drove there for 8 years. Very gutless (90bhp maybe) at altitude on the road. But offroad, just great ! Mountain 4x4 people KNOW that smaller is better, them huge trucks ain't a gonna do up in the rocks ! Sold in the 80's rusty, but fully operational for $1500.

Such fun.

SO fellow seasoned car veterans.... What was in the driveway ? GTO? Vette? Ferrari? Skylark ? Pacer ? Auction mail truck ?? Do tell.

/RZ

74 Mustang II. $500 in northern Ohio, geez that car was a rust machine. It ran the whole time I was in high school though, then my brother got it and started "working on it". Never ran after that. Second car was an 82 GT, "The Boss is Back!", which I bought when I went into the Marines. Always been a Mustang guy, except for that relatively brief period in the early 90's when I bought a Nissan or two.

Not old enough to drive until 1976, but from then until 1979:

1971 Gremlin (black with red stripe - slower than a herd of turtles);
1973 Maxda RX2 (wankel, 4 bbl - pulled hard and a lot of fun. Exhaust wore out real fast and prone to back-fire... the more it back-fired, the quicker the exhaust blew out...);
1967 GTO convertible - Cameo Ivory with Black top. Like the other GTO owner stated above, still have it.

My interest in Mustangs started in 1968 when I was 8 and living in SF. My dad's friend purchased a Shelby GT500 (aztec gold (I think that's what they called it) with white stipes), and I've wanted one ever since. I fondly refer to my current GT/CS as "SHLBY1AB".

Great thread.

OK, I'm only 40 (not often I can say only these days!) but it never ceases to amaze me of the cool cars teenagers used to be able to drive back in the early to mid '70s in the USA. It's unthinkable to us Brits that you could even get insurance on something so powerful.

My first car was a 957cc Ford Fiesta (Mk1). Yes, 957cc........as in less than 1 litre!!!

My second car was a 1.3 litre Ford Escort.

My third car, which was my first "proper" car in that it powered the rear wheels, was my '87 Mk3 Ford Capri. That had a whopping 1.6 litre 4-pot. It was several years before an insurance company would even consider insuring me on my dream car of the time, a 2.8 version of the same Capri.

I started with a 66 Mustang Fastback in '70. Next was a 68 GT350 (very abused, I made it worse) and then a succession of 67-68 cars that were all Buffalo, NY rustbuckets. The Saleen is my 23rd Mustang, and the only other stuff I've owned was a 72 Pinto wagon (302 / 4 speed), 71 Ranchero and the 85 Ranger I still own (2.3 Turbo 4x4).

My wife and I both had Capri's. Our first was a '73 in the Metallic Brown. And then we both ended up with '76 models, hers was a Green 4 cyl and mine was a Red 2.8...loved them!
