The 60th Anniversary Mustang is next month.
Yes, the first Mustang (260 c.i. engine) was made in April, 1964.
Ford later made the 1965 K-code 289" with a toploader 4-speed.
Ford broke all records and sold one million Mustangs in a model year (18 months).
