351 cleveland question
351 cleveland question
I work for a salvage yard here in Corpus Christi. I got a 351 Cleveland engine from a 73 Gran Torino.
It's my under standing that the Cleveland heads on a 302 windsor is what made the old Boss 302.
I want to use these heads to build an engine for my 88 5.0. Anyone have any experience with this? Particularly interested in weather or not the windsor block needs any machining to acomodate the Cleveland heads.
When I tore down the Cleveland block it looked like the cylinders were beveled to allow the valves to clear. I don't have my 302 apart yet to put the heads on it to see how they fit together.

i have done exactly what you want to do but i used 4 barrell heads .. i will search on another forum and find some info for you .. it is being discussed there as well ..there are companies that make parts for such a swap ..
The Clvd had a few different heads available. Do you know which one you got? ..because the intake / exhaust ports are different between the 2V and 4V heads on the Clvd engines. The intakes & headers are not interchangeable between the two. (2V or 4V is not number of valves per cyclinder like in today's world, but the number of barrels the carb they were equipped with from Ford had)
General over view of what I can recall off the top of my head:
- 2V Open Chamber - these were your run of the mill 2 barrel carb heads with the larger combustion chamber and smaller ports / valves. (Has a 2 in the corner of top of the head that can be seen with the valve covers installed.)
- 4V Closed (Quenched) chamber - these were the heads used on the 4 barrel cars and had a smaller combustion chamber with huge ports / valves. Loved rpms! 69 to early 71 I believe... The 'Boss' 302's used these heads on a 4 bolt main, high comp 302. (Has a 4 in the corner of top of the head that can be seen with the valve covers installed.)
- 4V open chamber - these had the valves / ports of the above, but due to emissions they had to open the chamber up, thus losing compression / hp. (Has a 4 in the corner of top of the head that can be seen with the valve covers installed.)
- 2V closed chamber (Aussie head) - these, as far as I know, were only made in Australia and utilized the closed chamber of the 4V, but the smaller ports / valves of the 4V head. Alot of people will pickup these heads and have the P&P'd then stuffed with larger valves from the 4V heads..

I haven't put them in the parts washer to clean the 40 years of crud off them yet so numbers are unreadable at the moment.
What little I've read on these heads says that they will breathe way better than stock 302 windsor heads and as well as most after market budget heads.
