FORD ROLLS OUT THE BLUE CARPET FOR OSCARS WEEKEND

 • Ford Motor Company has a series of events planned in Hollywood for Oscars weekend, with Oscar nominee Diane Keaton arriving at the awards in a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid.
 • Ford's "Red Tomato" Gran Torino is back in action, co-starring in the new Starsky & Hutch film remake of the 1970s television show.
 • Mustang celebrates "lifetime achievement" as the car used in films more than any other.
HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Feb. 24, 2004 - Lights! Camera! Cars! The men and women of the silver screen won't be the only stars shining at Hollywood celebrity parties during this year's Oscar Awards weekend. Ford Motor Company will join the glitterati with a series of events for the weekend, showcasing the icon movie cars that have co-starred with Hollywood's finest.

Hollywood stargazers will be rubbernecking at twice the amount of star sightings this weekend, as Ford icon movie cars will be displayed about Tinseltown - including a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid, driven by Oscar-nominated Diane Keaton.

Just in time for the March 5th release of the Starsky & Hutch movie, Ford will display the icon "Red Tomato" 1976 Gran Torino that stars in the new movie, and in the classic 1970s Starsky & Hutch television show.

Ford is the first automaker to sponsor the Motion Picture & Television Fund's "Night Before" charity event on Feb. 28 - marking the long love affair between Ford and film. On Feb. 29, the company will host its own Oscar Awards party - complete with Ford icon movie cars and a guest list that reads like an Oscar nominee envelope.

"Giving back to benefit the health and welfare of the community has been at the core of Ford's heritage, stemming back to the ideals of Henry Ford," said Jan Valentic, vice president, Global Marketing, Ford Motor Company. "We continue that spirit on many fronts today, including here in Hollywood. We are proud and excited to offer our support to the Motion Picture & Television Fund, which plays an important role in the entertainment community."

Going far beyond traditional health care, the Motion Picture & Television Fund offers a continuum of care for the very young to the elderly by providing quality medical and surgical services, health care, child care, residential living and care for older adults, as well as social and charitable services.

Ford's history with the Fund comes full circle
Most people know Henry Ford as the man who brought automotive travel to the masses. But few know that he helped move people in a different way - he moved their spirits through film.

Almost a century ago, Ford established Ford Motion Pictures, which became the world's largest film production company by the 1920s. Henry Ford made travelogue films and blazed trails with entertainment industry luminaries such as Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, who created the Motion Picture & Television Fund.

"Henry Ford saw himself not only as a person who moved people physically through automotive travel - he wanted to aid in their emotional journeys as well," said Valentic. "Apart from making available the means by which people could take to the road, Ford wanted to inspire people to actually make the trip - and that's where the travelogue movies came in."

While Hollywood stars cultivated glamorous on-screen and off-screen images, Ford's travelogue films emphasized travel, rural life and simple tranquility. The National Archives in Washington D.C. houses more than 3,000 films produced by Ford Motor Company from 1903 to 1954.

Ford's 100 years of inspiring Hollywood heroes
Ford's vision for the connection between cars and movies grew even further. He recognized the promotional value of the movies and was the first to place cars in Hollywood shows. From there, Ford vehicles embarked on a long and rich career as the co-stars to many of our culture's most-loved heroes and icon movie characters.

"Hollywood and Ford are both casting agents par excellence, looking for the perfect marriage between car and star," said Valentic. "Whether they travel on four wheels or two heels, our goals are the same - to create heroes that save the day and define cultural icons. What would James Bond be without his Aston Martin? What is Steve McQueen without his Ford Mustang? The cars possess every bit of the star power exuded by their actor counterparts, and we're passionate about continuing to create vehicles that evoke the same level of emotion."

The list of heroic characters and their Ford cars is long. Here are a few: James Dean's 1949 Mercury in Rebel Without a Cause; John Travolta's 1946 Fat Fender Ford Coupe, "Greased Lightning," in Grease; Steve McQueen's 1968 Mustang GT 390 in Bullitt; Sean Connery's 1964 Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger; Batman's Batmobile - originally a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car; Farah Fawcett's 1970s Mustang Cobra in Charlie's Angels; Thelma and Louise's convertible Thunderbird in Thelma and Louise; the 1992 Ford Explorer in Jurassic Park; the J1967 Jaguar XKE "Shaguar" in Austin Powers; Laura Croft's Land Rover in Tomb Raider, and the 1971 Ford Mustang "Eleanor" in Gone in 60 Seconds.

"People fall in love with the charisma of Hollywood stars the same way they fall in love with their cars," said Valentic. "What's great is that our 'star' vehicles don't reside just on the silver screen or in your dreams - you can drive one of your very own!"

An "L.A. Confidential" Sneak Peek
Stars such as Jennifer Aniston, Michael Douglas and Ben Affleck will join Bill Ford in giving partygoers a sneak peek at the all-new 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid, the cleanest, most fuel-efficient SUV ever mass produced. The vehicle will be officially introduced at the New York Auto Show in April.

Attendees will get their chance to take the wheel of the Escape Hybrid in an exciting simulator game that challenges the drivers to compete on fuel efficiency while navigating the streets of Los Angeles on their way to the Oscars - dodging limos and starlets along the way.

Actress Diane Keaton, nominated by the Academy this year for "Best Actress," will arrive at the red carpet in the new Escape Hybrid.

"Most stars know that what you drive is every bit as important as what you wear; cars are important fashion accessories for the Hollywood set," said Valentic. "The Escape Hybrid combines sportiness and functionality into an SUV that helps make the world a better place, which we know will be a win with the socially conscious entertainment community. Plus, we're already receiving requests for placing it in film and TV. It's a star in the making."

Ford shows off its star cast
While the stars schmooze, sip "Ford blue" martinis and stroll the "Ford Blue" carpet to the La Dolce Vita restaurant in Beverly Hills where Ford's Oscars Party on Sunday takes place, they will also get a taste of classic car culture. Marking the Ford Mustang's "Lifetime Achievement" as the vehicle placed in film and television more than any other, Ford has gathered a special collection of some of its most-loved movie Mustangs for display at the restaurant, including:
 • 1968 Mustang from Bullitt
 • 1967 "Eleanor" Shelby 500 Mustang from Gone in 60 Seconds
 • 2003 "Saleen" Mustang from The Fast and the Furious
 • 1965 Mustang convertible from Princess Diaries
 • 2005 Mustang, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Ford Mustang
