This new server has got to be frustrating everybody, and probably nobody more than Brad. My question is why the previous server was a problem, because I don't recall the old one crashing once a day or more (at least it seems that way). I just don't remember the old server being this much trouble, and it seems like a heads-tails flip of the coin on whether Mustang Source Forums is even accessible on a daily basis w/the new sever. I don't remember any problems at all with the old server. It could be the site design has just gotten to it's limits, who knows? It's almost like they are running the server on Microsoft IIS or something lame like that (netcraft shows Linux, but has no uptime info). I offer my help if needed, I'm a network and systems engineer.

I think it was due to hitting the capacity limits of the old server (if I'm correctly remembering what I was told by Kevin Casey)

OK way back when, the old server we started maxing out. Then about a month or so ago we upgraded to a lot better server taht ran great, but then had a catastrophic failure and the hardware provider basically said "sorry bout that." They lost all our backups and data completely. Luckily our host had a backup (the March 14th) one and they moved all of their servers to a new provider completely. Since this was a very spur of the moment move, configuration and getting everything else setup has been done in a much smaller window than what would have normally taken place, so sure there are kinks we are still having to work out.

Thats the cliff notes version.

This is correct. Technically there wasn't anything "wrong" with the old server, except the fact that it started to deny connections because of load. You have to remember that this forum/website started as a hobby and has grown into the source of information for all things Mustang. With that said, growing popularity has vaulted Brad from a small 300 person site to one that has traffic which rivals some search engines. With that amount of traffic brings special considerations for reliability and availability.

The move to the last server, which ended in catastrophic hardware failure, was to be the final upgrade for TMS (for a while at least). But obvious problems forced yet another change which we are working diligently to ensure it will be one of the last. We appreciate Brad and everyone's patience in this turbulent time.
