This is really getting on my nerves. Anytime I'm on TMS (which is a lot) my computer slows down dramatically when opening a new page.

At the bottom of the screen (where it tells you what's going on) first it tells me it's opening the page, then it tells me it's downloading the pictures, then it says it's "Building menu" This where it gets REALLY slow... when it's "builging menu". Takes about 15 sec for a page to load.

This is the only site that does this. It gets slower the longer I'm on here and even once I've closed all TMS windows, it seems to slow down other pages. The only way I can "reset" it is to reboot.

It's been doing this for several months and it doesn't do it on my computer at work. I've even recently reload Windows but the problem is still there.

Any ideas?

hmm have you updated everything accordingly from windowsupdate.com or are you running something other than IE?

The Javascript menu is HUGE and takes a long time to download.

Scott,
Yes, I'm running IE and I've done all the updates. I have them set to auto so it updates about every other day.

Brad,
Any ideas on how to make it load faster? Like I said, it loads faster at work and that's a dial-up. Strange, huh?

Open IE

Click on Tools > Internet Options

When the Internet Options window opens, click on the Advanced tab.

Click on the Restore Defaults button. Answer OK or Yes to any questions then click OK on the Internet Options window.

Close IE.

Report status.

Before I do that, what specifically do you think needs to go back to it's default setting? I have a lot of settings in there I want to keep.

Is there a way to increase the amount of memory used for things like the Java menu?

Mine does the same thing. The window basically locks when it's in the "Building Menu" stage and if i scroll or click while it's doing that I usually get taken places I don't anticipate going, like different links, scrolling all the way down the page, etc. I'm on dial-up.

Since I am not sitting at your computer, there is no way for me to know which toolbars/settings/theme's/add-ons you have loaded that could be causing the issue. So the catch all is to reset to default and see if it fixes it. If it does then you start adding your settings back until it causes the problem again.

Specifically I am looking to see if the Java JIT compiler is enabled. If it is, try disabling it.

Since Micro$oft doesn't "officially" support Sun Java, the answer is no. You can try installing the actual Sun Java packages instead of the Java Virtual Machine for IE.

Or you could load FireFox and give it a try.

It's a JavaScript menu, not a Java menu. Similar names, VERY different technology.

True. But in Microsoft's infinate wisdom, they have one compiler handle both. Even though the syntax is the same, they are technically two different languages.

That is why I recommend loading the SunMicrosystems Java packages, it knows the difference and will use the correct compiler.

Done.
Didn't work.
???
Does it matter that when I first start reading TMS the speed is fine? It's only after being on here a while and reading several threads that it slows down. The longer I'm on (the more threads I read) the slower it gets. Once I restart the computer, it goes back to normal speed again... until I have been on here a while and it starts all over getting slow again.
Was that any help?

Try one thing before we start ripping apart IE, load FireFox and give it a whirl.

Rinse and repeat.

Thanks. I downloaded it. It'll take some getting used to thoug. Several litlle things I don't like about it, but nothing major. I'll be able to find out tomorrow if it works. I'll let you know.

Off the subject, which is newer, Windows 2000 or Windows Milenium Edition? I'm trying to load Microsoft Office - Student. Says it will work with 2000.

2000 came out slightly afterwards.

2000 is built of the NT platform... Windows ME (Melinium) is built off the Windows 9x (95, 98) platform.

2000 is defintely better.
