Hey y'all. Just bought '06 Mustang GT. My 1st was a '76 Mustang II fastback I rebuilt from ground up in '86. The forums here have already solved a few issues. Thanks! Dani. 1976 Mustang II I rebuilt at 15/16 yrs old. Yes it was the 80s! 2006 Mustang GT. Haven't personalized yet.

Hope you don't take offense, as it is not intentional... However, the 74-78 Mustang II models were offered in two body styles, Notchback coupe and Hatchback coupe... There was no fastback option in existence until the arrival of the 2005 S197 Mustang which was also technically referred to as a 2-door coupe according to Ford Motor Co. Anyhow, my apologies in advance for coming across as ****-retinal... In the meantime, thanks for sharing your long history as a Mustang enthusiast along with posting an image of your very first Mustang back in "86" of your "76" Mustang II and congrats on your recent purchase of your new to you "06" GT, as she looks absolutely stunning, to say the very least... Meanwhile, welcome aboard!
Yes only been a year my apologies! I appreciate the info and WANT to be told correctly so no, no derogatory thoughts! I was just sort of parroting what all the guys in BFE America told me haha! Dang wish I still had that 76!
The 2006 has about 125K and, tho I'm understanding that generation was quirky, also so fun to tweak stuff improve and of course the occasional 120mph slow cruise! Thanks y'all love see all the cool mods n builds
The S197s did have a few quirks. My '06 liked to eat batteries. I drove it about 15 years and replaced the battery eight times. Ford switched to a 3-phase Denso-brand alternator in '09 (I think) in an effort to kill that issue. Not every Mustang had the issue though.
As she began approaching 200,000 miles, she started having overheating issues. There's space under the intake manifold that contains connection points and coolant hoses. The only way to get to them is to remove the intake - and everything that goes along with that. Not a hard fix, but a lot of billable labor.
Lastly, at 200,000+ miles, I started to hear the timing chain rattle on cold starts. Just for a few seconds, then it would stop once oil pressure was up. (This is on the 4.6L modular V8.) This is a sign the nylon plastic chain tensioners and the "fingers" that "push" them (using oil pressure) have worn through. If you keep your '06 long-term, this is a must-fix. The 4.6L modular is an "interference" engine - meaning that if the timing chain fails, the valve heads and the piston heads will hit each other. Then you're looking at an engine rebuild or replacement.
I looked upon that one as a must-sell, because the repair work exceeded the value of the car. I did not hide the information from the seller. They still decided to buy, and if they had the time and tools to go a-wrenching, more power to them!
This might sound like a lot, but remember it was all happening in the course of 15 years and 205,000 miles. The other 99% of the time, she was an unending blast to drive.

Thanks for being so understanding... In the meantime, it is true about the S197 models having some quirks to them, especially with the 2005-early 2008 GT cars with the dreaded 2-piece design spark plugs which were infamous for separating inside the heads during the extraction process.. Also, as mentioned above, the alternators were also well known for draining batteries until Ford replaced them for the 2010 model year with the Denso 3-phase alternators...
Then of course, those of us who have the premium options that include the vinyl door insert panels, are also well known for peeling off due to the crappy foam material on the underside of the vinyl inserts which eventually begin to degrade between 5-10 years...
But then again, all cars have their quirks someway or another, but in the end, I wouldn't trade my S197 "06" GT for any other car except for either a Roush, Saleen or Shelby GT500...

what year is this one? i am just guessing 67 or 68?
GUYS: i can tell its a 67 & not a 68 because the headlight is ONE MILLIMETER to the right on the 67.
