We always say the Redneck Riveria is Gulf Shores Alabama.... not Florida

 

Us Alabama folk don't go to Gulf shores much...
Its not really a vacation unless you cross a border.
I have been, and I don't like it there. Gulf too rough for my kiddies there. I like glassy water and white sand and no oil rigs.
PC Beach and Ft Walton is our redneck Riviera.

 

A lot of people don't consider Florida as a true southern state. Probably because most of us are not even southerners, between retirees moving here, the hispanic population and people from the northeast moving here for the weather.

I think this area is more of a spring break resort than a redneck riviera. Most of the out of state plates I see are from farther up north.

 

Honestly......
There is no better cure for every ill than 72 hours spent in Panama City every July.

St Andrews, Shell Island, Shipwreck Island, The Mariner, Scampis, Boogie Boards, Coconut Oil, Daquiris.........I get sick with excitement thinking about it.

 

Is Ellie making her first trip there this July?

Fun things I have observed:
Apparently in Alabama
All of us like to reenact the civil war
we all make a living as a siding salesman
we all live in double wides
we all drive big ole trucks
we all have coondogs named Bear
If not a Doublewide, we live in the family plantation home
if so, you have a friendly black maid who loves you and feeds you snack packs.
All of us eat grits 3 meals a day
we like flannel shirts and trucker hats....

Actually I am halfway between Memphis & Nashville, so whatever you want to call that.

And I have always been told that I sound like a yankee. People all the time tell me that I must have either been born in the North or moved there at some point in my life. But that's not true. Everyone around here are Southern sounding. Some so much so that I can't understand them.

Oh well, I am going to blame it on the speech lessons the school forced me to take. I went to take the Kindergarden enterance test & they told my ma-mow that I need speech too before school started & during school. All because I wouldn't talk.

So, I blame my elem school & the speech lessons.

 

My babies have New York accents compliments of their father. Then again my kids are mutts- older was born in San Diego va and younger was born in Hampton Va. And for the first 5 years my olders life we moved around- Charlotte, Orlando, Mississippi(Yes, my son was sposed to be born in Mississippi, so I travelled to Va just before he was born so he could be a virginian instead- born in the middle of Hurricane Felix in 1995),Dc.......I miss moving. Been back home since 1998- and have lived in 3 different places since then- now I am back home -3 minutes from my hometown and plan to stay.
I had a green Acres moment in 2001- I moved to a 40 acre farm in South Alabama, I planned to build my mansion and lay roots. Problem being, everyone there was an inbred, they didn't like outsiders, it was 80 miles to Birmingham and 60 to Tuscaloosa, the schools blew goat chunks, and we all killed 3 vehicles travelling back and forth. My daughters friend who also moved down there still talks to her- he says its a total misery living there. Been there done that, will never go within 50 miles of the place again. Gimme my suburban paradise over anything. NOW I got a publix 3 minutes from my house, and malls and everything I want

I think If I woulda married him 150 years ago I woulda got shot. A southern belle marrying a Long Island Yankee- but its a match made in heaven!

 

I am a mutt too. My Mom is from Southern Ohio and my Dad is From South Georgia. I was born in Miami. I've lived in Fl,Ga,Oh and Texas as well as 2 yrs in Germany. I'm a little fluent in a couple different versions of English.

 

I will move anywhere as long as its south of the Mason Dixon line and east of the Mississippi..... My kids are yankee belles.

Which pretty much means Va and Tn south minus Mississippi or the florida penninsula. I don't wanna live there again.
