Windows XP help needed

Help needed please!

I had to format my wife's laptop, have reinstalled XP home, but now have the followinf problems

1) it takes ages (5 minutes) to boot up

2) the standby button when you click start - shutdown is greyed out and you cannot click it.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

James

this means power management (ACPI) drivers weren't installed.
you should be able to download those drivers from the laptop manufacturer's site.
download and install all the available drivers, including Chipset, Video, Audio, network, etc..

as for boot up taking long..
you can start windows in Safe Mode (press F8 during startup, and you get a menu.. select Safe mode with Networking and enter)
this will show you what drivers windows is loading during startup.. those should be rolling relatively fast.. note down whichever one takes longer than usual.

anyway, start with the drivers first..this might sort it all out

good luck

I would also suggest doing the windows update www.windowsupdate.com and downloading and installing every update that you can, these might solve a lot of problems, as well as prevent new ones. It takes a while to get everything up to date, but it's a good idea.

I am assuming it wasn't slow before you formatted it? Possibly check for sp2 and maybe cut back on some of the apps if they are there.

Thanks guys. All sorted now. After running the driver recovery disk, the boot up is normal and the standby button is now operable.

Thanks again

it might have any serious reprcussions, but you should do it anyway:
with laptops, always download and install the manufacturer specific drivers from thier website. the drivers that XP will install and ones that are made specifically for the laptop will differ slightly

Dells in particular are great for having obscure drivers that windozes won't load. I always download all of the Dell drivers on my hard drive for just such an occasion.

I actually found the original driver recovery disk that came with the laptop, so it's all good.

Thanks again
