I would expect nothing less than the book thrown at me if I were to do something bad like rape or murder r plot to murder or swindle or steal or maim or any other of the litany of bad bad things that can be done. Maliciously, of course.
Innocent, unaware, obvlious, accidental... I would, in those cases, be hopeful that I might stave off a harsh penalty for it. I didn't mean to, of course. But I would accept my fate whatever that is, because in the end... I guess I did the bad thing.
Unless I absolutely didn't, then I'm fighting tooth and nail and saw and hammer and whatever else I can get my grubby mitts on to defend myself.
Having said that... you are darn tootin (since I can't type **** straigh here and it show up) that if any of my family or friends did a bad bad thing and it deserves prosecution and jail time... or worse if applicable... They're going down. I am no harborer of criminals. Should not have done it, you will own it now.
Because I expect it in reverse. I hope to never, ever have either way tested.

I would not tell but I would become the judge and jury. if they took something that wasn't theirs I would cut one of their fingers off. if they killed or raped someone I would kill them after making them dig a hole they could fit in..... no wait that would make me the bad guy. What did a family member or best friend do Joe?? I would probably try to get them to do the right thing.

You turn the person in. Not doing so is usurping the authority of the law. Besides, how would you feel if someone close to you is raped/murdered/framed and the people who know about it clam up?

If they committed a serious crime and were stupid enough to tell me (I'm from a long line of veterans/cops), I would turn them in simply for being that dumb.
On a more serious note, I would do my best to convince them to do the right thing, and if they wouldn't - I would do the right thing for them.
