Exclamation VIN Decoder Fraud !

Hey guys, I bought a vehicle that had front end damage from a collision, which wasn't disclosed by the seller. And he’d shown me a CARFAX report, which also didn't show any accident records — the car was absolutely clean according to it. However, I ran a report on another website, epicvin.com, and it showed that the car was in an accident and then repaired. I don't know why this information wasn't disclosed by CARFAX, but now I'm aware that CARFAX isn’t a service that can be trusted, and I won't use it again.

I wouldn't call what you found fraud....that's a strong term and a serious accusation. Carfax is only as good as what's reported to it. It's still a very good service, not the end all to be all, but a very good starting point.

But as with anything else...caveat emptor.

Yeah, I guess, I'm just terribly disappointed at Carfax. One'd expect better service at such a price. Another site presented me with photos of the auctions, that were never even enlisted in Carfax report.
Well, you can see for yourself

and the Carfax report

Three wrecks are bad enough, but with the smashed front they've concealed from me..

are you going to take the car back? It should be worth less than what you paid for it now that you know it was wrecked.

I have bought a few cars. When the Damage happens it takes a while for Car Fax to get the information if they get it at all. You can have a wreck then get a car fax and months later it shows. I have seen many dealers and private sales do this.
It sucks

Carefully crafted stealth spam posting!

First post slams the most well known service. Then along comes his second post with what is obviously his alternative site for reports.

I had a lot of difficulties selling my car because of the inaccurate information that CARFAX provided. The report said that the vehicle had two owners, but actually I was the only person who owned this car. Moreover, they showed that the vehicle had been in two accidents, which isn't true either. It has only been in an accident once but still was drivable, and CARFAX described it as "Towed from scene" for some reason! Needless to say that these two facts devalued the car and it was really hard for me to sell it. CARFAX should be more responsible for the information it provides in their reports, instead of putting any information they want, which, apart from being incorrect, causes troubles for other people!
You're so not alone in this

I must stress this.....CARFAX does not just magically come up with VIN info. Someone has to report it to them...insurance companies, MVA's, etc.

In my career as an auto claims adjuster before I retired, I can't tell you how many times I've seen mistakes on police reports, especially "Towed From Scene". All the policeman has to do is to check the wrong box and it becomes a permanent record. Happens all the time. Dozens of things can go wrong in the reporting process to CARFAX. They only spit back a report based on info that they received. Insurance companies are just as guilty in providing erroneous or duplicate information.

I'm not here to defend CARFAX. If you ordered something from a vendor on-line but made a mistake when you gave them your address, who's to blame if your package isn't delivered? It's the same thing.

Doesn't carfax have a guarantee? Does that only give you your money back that you paid for the report?
