Toshiba withdraws from HD-DVD format
I've waiting on the sidelines to see which format will come out on top. It now appears that Blu-ray will be the winner:

I've been mulling over putting together a media center PC but I was stuck on what type of DVD-ROM to put in it. It looks like it'll be Blu-ray!

I think Sony put the nail in the coffin by making the PS3 a blu-ray player.
I wouldnt get too serious about starting a big collection of blu-rays though, it wont be too long before hardcopy disks are a thing of the past and the video equivalent of an ipod takes over where you just buy the movies which are sent directly to your hard drive.

At any rate, a Blu-ray DVD-ROM in PC will allow me to view rented Blu-ray discs from Netflix.

I've got the HD for Xbox
If Toshiba pulls HD, expect MS to add a BluRay player to the Xbox.
Doesn't make my HD-DVDs obsolete, just sucks if the hardware breaks down and I won't be able to buy a replacement
(time to start ripping my HD-DVDs for backup...

I know they are trying to push that but I for one like to have a hard copy and the box. I could go download them for free if i wanted to go that way. But i don't i go to the store and buy it so i can have the box and the disc.

both my brother and my friend bought a ps3 this past month. both because of the blu ray player. they are gamers, but they arent big fans of sony games. they love them some nintendo.
they kept reading up on which will win the war, the hd or the blu ray. seems like they chose correctly. my brother called me up with this news a couple of days ago.

HD DVD is dead, it just doesn't know it yet...
All the main distributors have pretty much pulled out or are about to pull out of HD DVD support all together... This has been since about the beginning of the year... Best Buy is about to (or already has, I don't remember 100%) back Blu Ray for when referring customers between the 2 formats... A lot of the chain stores have or will stop selling the HD DVD hardware, but the discs are supposed to stay around a few more months...

Well what do I know, I had two beta VCRs. So I didn't buy into the battle for a hidef DVD format. My standard def DVD player is Sony's first player. It was their reference player ($1200 retail in 1997). Built like a tank and still works great in my home theater system. Yes blu ray looks better than standard def DVD, but it is not exactly like the difference between DVD and VHS. And since new release DVD movies can be bought at my local Frys Electronics store for about $16, why should I spend $25 to $30 for a Bluray disc? Let me know when the price of Bluray discs comes down to about the price of standard DVD discs. Then maybe.
