static electricity

Anybody else blow out their laptop with a static electric shock to the mouse, mine is connected to USB via cable ? I hate the finger pad.
I have lost the USB ports and the sound card function ! Second time its happened and Dell won`t cover this time. A system scan shows the system board is fried. BIG $$$$$`s

You need to stop the build up of static. Take your sneakers or shoes off before using your laptop, put an earth strap of the mouse mat, touch a metal radiator before using the laptop, etc etc. (stop rubbing baloons on your chest to see if they will stick to the wall before using the laptop).

Wow, I never knew static electricity can mess up a Laptop

Talking about static electricity... When I get out of my car after driving, I get a good voltage going through my fingers when I close the door. It sucks... I now close the door with my foot

Even better when you build up enough charge to see the arc

Static electricity is thousands of volts (not amps) so it can fry electical components VERY easily, and not all of it is evident right away...it can happen over time.

To the guys getting a shock from the car. My mustang used to do this to me as well. What you need to do is get hold of the door skin BEFORE you step onto the ground. That way the electricity earths from a "complete" circuit rather than making the leap from your finger to the metal.

Basic physics young grasshopper. It will not shock you if it doesn't have to jump.

Obviously, do not try this whilst plugged into the cars cigarette lighter, as a 12v 25a shock will hurt.

(On my old 1964 Land Rover, while screwing the battery terminal on (under the passenger seat), I made contact with the bodywork. Bloody spanner welded itself to the bodywork (and burnt my fingers in the process))
