Questions about ripping DVD to iPod....

So I got a 80 gb iPod for Christmas ( a black one ) ... and of course I quickly pick all my Classic Rock and metal on it ( and Glenn Miller...). I even bought Pirates 1 of iTunes.

But I of course don't want to pay for all my movies again, they don't even have Just Friends or Better Off Dead.... So i bought some DVD ripping software from ImTOO.

It worked fine except, for one small little detail. None of the words match the lips!!! Its like cheap martial arts movie madness. Im guessing it has to do with either the AUDIO SAMPLE RATE or the AUDIO BIT RATE. ( set stock to 44100 and 80)

What should I set these setting for ripping a DVD??? Only one movie is working properly(Batman Begins)....

Im guessing that a fellow TMS'er has some knowledge in this area. If you need the other settings let me know.

Do you by chance have access to a Mac? A program I have seen is Handbrake, including an "instant" version for PSP or iPods. You put in the disc, set what language you want, and hit go.

The project is evolving into MediaFork, and both have Windows versions, but they aren't really complete at this point.

For your existing program, most DVD audio is 48khz (48000) or 96khz. It sounds like the program is asking what you want to convert it to, along with a bit rate (size basicially) for the file. So try 48000, and try the bit rate at 128. It should be decent enough audio quality at that rate for the iPod.

I bought a program from Wondershare. Followed the instructions to a T, and NOTHING!! . When I tried to hook up the iPod, it said that my iPod is unable to have files written in. Does anyone have the Wondershare DVD to Ipod program? I could use some help. I tried to import Bullitt, but couldn't get it to load. Any help will be much appreciated.

You can't write directly to ipod. You will have to use iTunes. If you convert your movie to the appropriate .mp4 file. Use iTunes to add the .mp4 file to your library. When it is added to your library then it can be synch'd to the ipod.

I don't have imTOO but i'll tell you what I use and maybe it will give you some insight.

Always rip the DVDs to your hard drive first. I use DVDShrink for that for that. It's free. To convert to your ipod, use Nero if you have it. There is a tool that comes with Nero called Recode2. Choose Recode DVDs to Nero Video. There is a button for choosing a profile. Choose the profile for ipod AVC. Select the already ripped movie file and click burn. If you have a recent verion of iTunes you can load it to your ipod, if not then just save the .mp4 file to your drive. Then use iTunes to load the .mp4 file to your library and sync to your ipod.

Generally, these settings may be helpful:
Ipods use .mp4 AVC
resize the video to 320x224 for 16:9 letterbox movie
video quality 500-600 kbps
audio 64kbps 44100 Hz, 96kbps 48000 Hz
Wikipedia may be able to give you more help

I use "Ripit4me" to rip the movie, and then use Nero Recode 2 (Pay) or Videora Ipod Converter (Free).

http://www.ripit4me.org/ - requires a few other programs so read the guide.

http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/

The following link has setting for videora for different format movies and output options.

Hope this helps!!

Ok heres the option/ stock settings provided:

Its ripping to 640X480 iPod Video2 format (MP4), the options are iPod 320X240, MP3, MP4A, and MP4.

The video bit rate is set to 2500(512,1200,1500 are options) with auto video frame rate.

The aspect ration is set to auto.

Why would the lips not match the words???? What would cause that????

I've used PQ DVD to rip DVDs to my daughter's iPod and my PalmPilot. It costs $40 but it works very well.

Hey Neil, thanks for the reply. The thing is, the program I purchased, automatically converts all movies to .mp4 files. The only problem I have is getting the converted movie files to load into iTunes. I can't seem to do that.
