I just bought a laptop from Dell, It was the Inspiron 6000, costed 1200 bucks and works like a champ. Dells by far are the most reliable laptops out there and many many companies use them. I had this question @ first when looking for a laptop, so I went and asked my ITS guy at work and he said go Dell by far most reliable and best bang for your buck.

I have run my HP pavillion ZE5700 (bought for $1300 18 months ago) and the thing has been great. even spilled beer on the keyboard and it didn't affect it!

Id go with a Dell simply because they are the best computer that a common consumer could buy. A sony Viao might be good but I dont now much about them but sony products are really good.
