Thumbs up

My husband and I have been seriously thinking of relocating from PA to TX for a change of scenary. My younger Bro lives down there with his wife and baby and we've thought about joining them. My problem is...how easy will it be to find new jobs and start all over? If anyone is from that general area or if you've moved a long distance, I'd appreciate any comments. Also, we want to by a house and the average price of a home in our area is well over $200,000 for only 1,000-2,000 sq ft, which we don't have to spend. I couldn't help but notice how much cheaper homes are down south...wow! So any input would be great...thanx!

200k for a 2,000 sq ft home?!?!

My aunt and uncle just paid roughly 170 for a 4200sqft home with a pool, 2 stall rv garage, 4 car seperate garage/shop and 10 acres of fenced in pasture for their horses. Now its not in the city, but isnt but about 30min from downtown.

I love the south even more now.

I hate PA. It's the worst state. The snow stinks, the roads stink and the drivers stink even more. 'Bama here I come!

Theres something you can't beat about bama- the houses are big and affordable. My same 2 story, 2 car garage, kitchen, breafast room, dining room, two living room, 3bed 2 bath house would cost me about $400,000 up north- my sister in law lives in my houses slightly smaller identical twin. $135,000 here. Boogity.
Oh- and you can't beat the spectacular looooooooooong warm season!

Be careful what you say Scott. The next time your doorbell rings I could be on your doorstep j/k

Are there a lot of professional fire depts. hiring down there? I've been a volunteer for 4 years and thats what I want to do. Right now I work in mortgage servicing for a bank but I need a new job. Either fire fighting or getting into the automotive business.

I've only been to Bama once and that was just to drive through. My idea was to stick near family, which is why we were thinking TX (I'm a big family person and have never lived outside PA). Otherwise, we also have family in SC, FL, & GA...any ideas? I've been to where my bro lives and its just beautiful. He doesn't live in the city of Fort Worth, but only about 20 miles or so away. We saw a nice area we liked called White Settlement, but we're not sure yet. Like I said earlier, I'm scared about finding a new job. My husband is a fire fighter and we know they have plenty of open positions in TX for him. Up here there's nothing...he scored 69 out of 400 people for is cival service test and that's not good enough. The whole state of PA needs to be blown up and let's just start all over (in my opinion!)

I could not beleive the prices of the mansions in Alabama that April posted one time. She said it was in deliveranceville though. Big huge house for cheap.

In SC you can buy a nice brand new 2000+ square foot house for under 200K. I live in Upstate SC. My dream is too move closer to the coast. Its nice and warm here most of the time too and we rarely get snow. When we do the whole town stops so it means a day off!!

Heck, we don't get snow days anymore now that I'm an adult! We could have 2' of snow on the ground and everyone still does 60 mph like its nothing! Forget it if you don't have an SUV or 4WD car....you're screwed! I do like the change of seasons up here though. Maybe we could find a place that still has the change of season, but not with such serverity. My husband absolutely hates it in PA (his originally from NY) and I feel so bad for him. Unfortunately, we have to wait till October when our lease expires at our apt complex! :bang:

Those houses are in some of the best deer hunting land in the country. When we say rural, we truely mean it.

I lived down in that black hole for twenty months. I hear the name Marion now I get nauseous. :notnice: Godawful- and after emerging from the black hole: we have One near dead alero, one dead Bronco and one dead F-150 from putting 1,000 miles a week on them just to get anywhere.

I saw some big huge giant monster bucks, ten months a year. Somehow they seemed to disappear around opening day, and re appear in February. Only male who killed a deer in two hunting seasons was my son. Four point.

GEEZ! my parents' house is a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, kitchen, dining, and living room house and it's $450,000! And our backyard is pretty small (as you can see from that google satellite map thread)

On topic...homes in the area range from $90-$130 for 2,000 sq/ft., depending on area.

What info do you want to know? What type jobs, etc?

Oh...hope you like the heat! (summer time, summer time)

My family moved from Idaho to Wisconsin in 2002. Only thing I can say is ... I hate East coast. Life here stinks. As soon as I finish college, I'm moving back somewhere in West Coast.

I'm worried about jobs mostly since the cost of living is much lower in TX vs in PA. Like I said earlier, I've never lived outside of PA and I'm just worried....any info you could provide would be great!
