In the automotive world, a concept car is one that is made and show to the world and its cameras, and could possibly be built if the company wants to build it. A prototype would be like the mules that the company would use in later development and testing before they actually started building the cars.

The dictionary definitions would be very different.

And some of the companies should stick to building some of the concept cars. They look cool and there not from a cookie cutter mold. Would be interesting to see some of them on the road instead of just sitting at the auto shows.

concept cars are for building an unnessesary level of excitment in order to draw intrest in a certain area of thier program....sometimes....the concept and prototype can be one in the same.....(Ford GT40/Ford GT).. I dont recall there being a concept that was very far off of the production version of that vehicle...
