Movie was OK, kind of like national treasure. They said a few things in the end to keep from ticking people off who may have been offended. Not one I'd see again.

I am more surprised at the reaction to the novel then Brown writing it. I really don't know what all the fuss is about -- does ANYONE really believe this stuff as "truth" anyway? Sure it is interesting to think about for a day or two, but it certainly isn't going to change anyones belief system.

But, from a movie perspective, they should have done Angels and Demons as it is less controversial (about the battle between the church and science) and just as action/puzzle-oriented.

Of course, maybe that is why they did the DaVinci code -- to get all the free press from the religious wackos (not that all religious people are that way--just enough for free press).

I mean, it isn't like you heard arnarchists complaining about The Passion of the Christ.

Maybe that is because rational people understand one movie or book isn't going to determine what someone believes.

And Doug, I really don't think ANYONE has a negative impression of DaVinci becuase of Brown's book/movie -- his reputation is still in tact.

What I find funny is the reactions people have to the ideas presented in the book. Are they 100% true? Not likely... but how do we honestly know, with absolute certainty, what truly happened 2000 years ago let alone during Da Vinci's time (500 years ago)?

Now I'm not a religious person but I do find some reactions to anything questioning religion curious. Of course that probably explains why I'm a fan of Kevin Smith's comic silliness "Dogma"!!

The problem is that he states in several places in the books "facts" that are just flat out wrong. Just a couple of examples from the book:

"Fortunately for historians... some of the gospels that Constantine attempted to eradicate managed to survive. The Dead Sea Scrolls were found in the 1950s hidden in a cave near Qumran in the Judean desert."

There were no gospels in the dead sea scrolls and they were discovered in 1947 not the 1950s. There is not even 1 mention of Jesus in the dead sea scrolls.

"Christianity honored the Jewish Sabbath of Saturday, but Constantine shifted it to coincide with the pagan's veneration day of the sun."

That again is absolutely false. There are historic writings 150-200 years prior to Constantine that indicate that Christians worshiped on Sunday.

There is a show on the SCI-FI channel called "CRACKING DAVINCI'S CODE", that debunks the "facts" in the book.

I don't have a problem with calling the book fiction, but I do have a problem when the author tries to pass off as facts so many obvious historical errors.

Unfortunately, in America, more people will end up believing a movie's version of "history" rather than the historical record. Oliver Stone's version of the JFK assasnination is a great example of this.

I think thats probably true, they saw how much publicity the passion of the christ got (christian support rather than boycotting) but theres no such thing as bad publicity and you know the da vinci code is gonna make a lot of money even though from everything you hear it is an average movie at the very best.

Another thing is that once religion goes under the spotlight rationality seems to go out the window. Case and point, Salman Rushdie and The Satannic Verses. It is not his best work, but since it raises certain 'unfavorable' theological questions it wasn't received too well by the muslim community. So unfavorable that there was a bounty put on his head, and because of the stir it caused his popularity grew exponentially. Its almost the same situation as with Brown, but to a greater extent.

The thing is, the book is fiction, but the church keeps raving about it, and trying to stop it. Why would they be so mad at a work of fiction?

Because in certain parts of the book he states "facts" that are blatenly false. See above.

That's why they have a problem with it. If I wrote a best selling fiction book statin "facts" about you that were not true...
