Guitar Center Purchases Signed Guitar Models for U.S. Distribution and Benefit of "Crossroads Centre" in Antigua

Gibson Eric Clapton Crossroads 335
Since its introduction in 1958, the Gibson ES335 has always been regarded as one of the most desirable electric guitars ever made, and by the '60's had become even more so by virtue of the high profile of Eric Clapton. Inspired to purchase one in London in 1964 while playing with the Yardbirds, the cherry red 335 became a staple of Clapton's guitar arsenal for the next 4 decades. The guitar was perhaps most famous for its use during the "Cream" years, and achieved special notoriety as the guitar he played on one of his most spectacular recordings - "Crossroads" from the Cream "Wheels of Fire" album.

By 1998, Clapton was heavily involved in creating a new vision, the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, an international treatment facility for addictions. To help publicize and finance this mission, he offered for auction many of his beloved guitars for this charitable benefit. Along with his "Blackie" Stratocaster, the Gibson 335 was the centerpiece of the second of these auctions, held at Christie's New York on 24 June, 2004. It was there that Guitar Center purchased the guitar for $847,500 making it arguably the most valuable Gibson in the world.

After the purchase, Guitar Center discovered that Gibson and Eric had already discussed the possibility of producing a replica of the guitar. Naturally Guitar Center partnered fully with both Eric Clapton and Gibson to ensure that this dream came to fruition, and took the original guitar to the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville for meticulous measurements and inspection.

The processes used to faithfully reproduce the guitar include digitizing the neck with a laser beam to ensure dimensional accuracy, aging the finish to simulate 40 years of loving use, replicating the Hare Krishna sticker given to Eric by George Harrison, and stenciling the "distressed" case with the "CREAM" logo - as per the original. Guitar Center photographed and filmed the manufacturing process of these guitars, elements of which are available for viewing on this site.

Every effort has been made by all concerned to ensure that this recreation is as accurate as possible. Approved by Eric Clapton, and bearing his personal signature on the guitar label, you can be assured that we were successful.

We are now delighted to announce that the first of the Eric Clapton Crossroads 335's will be offered for sale on Saturday, July 30th, and launched in print via our August Buyer's Guide. (Please click here for the Guitar Center Magazine Ad).

Only 250 of these historical guitars will be produced by Gibson for worldwide sale, and the entire USA distribution of 175 guitars will be offered for sale exclusively through Guitar Center stores, with a significant portion of the proceeds benefiting the Crossroads Centre. A limited number of guitars will be on display in major cities for all to enjoy immediately prior to the on sale date, though the guitar may be special ordered from any Guitar Center location nationwide as of 30th July. We expect huge demand for this iconic instrument, and all orders will be fulfilled on a first come, first served basis.
