Family of four missing after house slides into 1km x 500m sinkhole
Last night in a small town near Montreal a small hillside slumped and slid towards a nearby creek. It's believed that the family was in the basement watching the Stanley Cup playoffs. Rescuers have thus far been unable to locate the family on their property. I don't think this is going to have a good ending.
I can't recall seeing a sinkhole this big before.
To get a sense of thescale of the photo, if you look carefully you will see a person standing on the road to the right of the hole, and just to the left of him there is a red pickup truck that fell into the hole. The driver escaped with only minor injuries.
More pics and story here.

That's what appeared to have happened.
UPDATE: The rescuers have found the family's dog, muddied but unharmed. The foundation of the house was destroyed. If the family was indeed in their basement as believed then this won't turn out well.
The parents are believed to be in their early 40's, with two girls, 6 and 11 years old.

The question I have is: Is it a sinkhole if it moves down range? That's more a slide of sorts...
In any event... could you imagine being in that? I can't. Man. That is just... o.0

re:2012, well, actually, it's more like 2 and 1/2 years to go... Because that's December 2012. We're fairly ok until then, as I understand it.
/sure does seem weird all the Earth issues in very recent times...

It's been confirmed that it did not end well. At 8:30pm it was confirmed that the family of four was found in their basement TV room. It did appear to end quickly though, if that provides any solace. Two people were found still seated on the couch, presumably watching the Canadiens playoff game. If they hadn't been in the basement watching the TV they would be alive, the house was otherwise intact. The family lived in a tiny community where everyone knows everyone else, the whole community is on mourning.
Story here.
Given that the fervor for hockey is on par with religion here, (I'm not exaggerating, it really is) it wouldn't surprise me if the team does something to honour the family at some point.
