I just ordered DSL lite from my local phone company BellSouth. Does anyone have it and what do you think of it. I am sure other phone companies probably offer something similar. Thoughts anyone??

I get my DSL through the Cable company. We pay like 40 dollars a month. I had a few problems with mine because the wires were horribly placed on the lines by the old company before Mediacom took over.

I have bell south DSL and I love it.
Always on and networks to all my computers. No hangups or brownouts like the one from Directv I used to have, and its swift too.

No! Its absolutely easy.
Everything but the filter is super easy.
They UPS you all the stuff, and you plug it and click it in.
The line I use for the DSL is shared with my fax, so we needed the filter- Thank God my husband is a phone guy, you put the filter in at the demarc into your house- where the lines come from the street to the house.
Otherwise, if you have a dedicated line for it, you don't need a filter, and it takes about 5 minutes to hook it up.

My DSL is great installed it myself and it was easy. Just recently bought a new notebook so I hooked up a wireless network not easy get help with wireless so you can secure it from others. My brother in law comes over and uses the computer a lot so I use my notebook at the same time and can't tell the difference.

Thanks for the responses. I am glad I signed up. There was a very good special right now. I was a little concerned about a good Firewall. I have one from Webroot and I am going to keep AOL which "says" it has one in it. Hope that will be enough.

OOh,
Mine appeared to have "issues" with AOL.
Watch out for it freezing or acting nuts when you go on there. I ended up removing AOL from the computers to keep it working.

AOL is the devil.

I highly recommend cable broadband as well as DSL. Even if you rarely use the internet, it makes things so much easier. If you are using either, go ahead and get a router to hook between your computer and the modem. Makes for a nice firewall and also makes it easy if you are hooking up more than one router. If you decide to go wireless, in your router, the best thing you can do is set it to NOT broadcast your SSID. That way no one wont "accidentally" stumble onto your network

I agree with you there...the only reason I am keeping it for now is I have a ton of pictures stored online there. After I get them all moved then I will cancel. I sure don't need any issues. Was good to hear thats its easy to set up.

I used to feel all loyal like- I had it since it started.
Now I despise it- I enjoy not having dial up.
But I still have the account, just can't bring myself to close it.

Umm... Not to be too nerdy about it, but no you don't. You get Cable Internet through your cable, not DSL. WAY different stuff.

But anyway...

I had/have SWBell DSL at my work and home (before the move) It works pretty good. Depending on circumstances, it can be as fast as T1 or 1.5Megs. Which, if you'll consider, is pretty darn fast since a dial up is only .056Megs if you're VERY lucky. Usually, it'd be .044 or something.

But mostly DSL is around 384K download (or .384Megs) Still plenty fast.

And Cable internet is usually beating DSL to snot in speed. It's stupid fast. But it does vary unlike DSL, depending on how many people are sharing your pipe. DSL is a single pipe per user thing, so it's a constant speed.

Either way, they are both reliable and fast. On the average, here in Houston, I recommend Road Runner over SWBell, because it's just plain faster. Ya can't get it everywhere, so there's where the SWBell comes in. And we don't recommend any other services, because there's no point. Either use those two, or don't bother, 'cause you'll just get screwed on price. At least for that kind of internet service class. There are others, but those are corporate type stuff.

I prolly typed too much. (hicccup!)

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot. I agree. AOL is da DEBIL!!!!! And it REALLY bites if you get it with the broadband. Ugh. Multiple layer support is teh suxors!!!1!1!!one!

I had AT&T broadband cable and it was fast, no phone line in my house was ever turned on, cable internet and cell phone. I moved and got DSL and it was just as fast but I hated having to buy a phone line just for the connection.

I have read really good things about Road Runner, but its not available in my area. DSL has not been avalable here for long. The special deal was 19.95 for 6 months and then 34.95 after. I figure I am paying 23.90 for AOL thats not much difference. They tried to sell me some bundle pkg with long distance but I steered clear and only ordered the DSL. Free modem w/rebate and free activation.

I have thought about just keeping cell phones but I despise our cable company here so I will just keep my phone line. The cable internet service was over 50.00 a month. We need some options in this hick town. Charter Communications has a monopoly on all our Cable choices.

Yea,
I hate Charter too- so I got Directv and adore it.

Again, Bell is great- you will be pleased.

Since I am the last person on earth who is cell-less, I got their unlimited Long Distance too. Call all I want- $20 a month.
