Can you imagine the horror?! Those cursed creatures eating up the poor cattle's feed. What good are skinny cattle at the slaughterhouse?!!! Thank God you have empowered the only man wise and brave enough to stand up to those wicked steeds. Those little Ponies will think twice about screwing with the livestock industry now! RENO, Nev. - For the first time in more than a generation, the mustang β€” the very symbol of the American West β€” can be slaughtered for horsemeat.

In December, Congress repealed the 34-year-old ban on the slaughter of the wild horses that run free across the West. The move has brought a powerful backlash from activists, who want to reinstate full protection for the mustangs.

β€œIt is really a slap in the face to the American people,” said Betty Kelly, co-founder of the horse protection group Wild Horse Spirit in Virginia City, Nev.

Acting on behalf of ranchers who say the horses eat forage needed by cattle, Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., attached the amendment in December to a spending bill that President Bush signed into law.

Uh...we're like one of the few countries that don't eat horse on a regular basis.

Isn't this just one more way to conform to the world order? Liberals should be happy.

Further, do you have a good way to thin out the herd? I suppose letting them starve to death for lack of food is far more humane.

 

That figure is what they think should be there. If the horses are truly wild, natural selection will keep the herd at the correct numbers. They are an indiginous species, therefore will live to the means that the surrounding area can sustain.

 

Actually...horse are not indiginous...they were "imported" thanks to the Spanish in the late 1600's.

And if cattle and horses have to live on the same area, there has to be compromise on population so that the species can survive and ranchers still turn a profit.

What really ticks me off with this is the way the law got "tacked on" to a budget plan...

Reminds me of that Simpsons cartoon about the airplanes flying too low... The Simpsons wanted to put into law that the planes shouldnt fly so low, and this person told them to attach/hide their amendment unto a bill

I can't believe a representative from Montana would put something that frivolous into law. Obviously he hasn't been in Montana for quite a few years. It's not the Mustang running freely that are the problem it's all the californians buying the land from the ranchers so they can have their vacation homes.
