I Remember Back in The 80's We Would get Paperwork From Ford on How To Tell The Difference!
I Would Bet Good Money Those Cheap 4.6L/5.4L Timing Chain Sets on Ebay With Perfectly Straight FORD Labels on Every Part are Knock Offs! Ford Did Not Label Every Part Perfectly. I Should Know I Checked Them into The Dealership For Many Years off The Truck. I Can Usually Sniff Them Out Pretty Well! Kinda Like I Do With Spammers!
Just Because a Part Has a Ford Number On it Don't Always Make it Legit! Want an Example Here is a Made in China Copy Wheel Center Cap vs Oem!
Guess Which is Legit!
Right or Left and Why??
Don't Research Just Guess By Looking at What is In front of You!

They both have some quality issues, but I pick the one on the right as being real Ford. The legs, the mane, the horse head and the tail look more correct on the right one.

If the photo is focused on both equally, I like the one on the right for more clarity, as the one on the left appears reproduced and not as sharp, both front and rear.
Just Like The Old Adage That a Copy of A Copy Of a Copy gets Less Defined! What You Can't See in This Pic is The Little Run of Casting Flash Like on the Chrome Parts of a Plastic Model Kit When Broken off of Tree. All The China Copies Both Tribar & Black Pony Have Them At The 7:00 Area. Don't Feel Bad if You Got it Wrong as Currently a Long Time Obsolete Supplier Has Some Listed on Ebay as NOS OEM. The Numbers on The Back Include a Month Clock With an Arrow Which on The Copies Seem To Always Point To Almost 1 Where Originals Can Be at Any Time Although Sets Are Usually The Same Time. There are Also Some Copies Without Anything on The Back. So Anyhoo The EASY Way is Simply To Look For The Triangle. Those Are OEM.
Btw, Both of The Caps Are Obsolete From FORD and NOS Black Ones Are Pretty Much Non-Existent With a Few TriBar Ponies Out There! Most Used Examples I Have Seen Are in Pretty Poor Shape!
An Authorized FORD Repop {Scott Carpenter for EXAMPLE} Would Be More Likely if Were Not For The Flood of Cheap Unauthorized Caps Keeping Demand Down! Kind of a Pisser! Oh And If You Notice They Always List The Copies as USED on Ebay Even Though They Are New! Must Be Some Kind of Loophole To Sell The Copies Without Consequence!
I Have No Doubt To My Findings As I Have Both Styles & Sets in Copies and NOS Oem Caps.
Thanks For Playing!
When Buying Parts If It Seems Too Cheap To Be a Original and it's Being SOLD as Original Part Sometimes Just Inferred! Do Some Research!
On A Side Note I Advised The Obsolete Supplier of Their 2 Listing Errors. Lets See if I get Dead Air, A Kind Response or Told I Don't Know What I Am Talking About!
I have read that there might be counterfeit FRPP oil filters on e-bay too. Hard to believe that it would be worth the effort.
The FRPP Filters are Spendy and Even Back in The 80's Ford Was Warning About Fake Filters. Cosmetic is One Thing But a Crappy Filter Could Grenade a Motor! That Would Frost My Hide!

Definition:
A counterfeit is a non-genuine article, a fake, or an imitation of something valuable, such as money, documents, designer items, or other goods.
Purpose:
Counterfeiting generally involves creating an imitation that closely resembles the original to deceive others into believing it is authentic.

I'm with Steve and Dave for picking the one on the right as being the authentic for the same reasons...
