I think more than half of all people can read this. Its well known that's how humans read. It doesn't take a great mind, just a decent ability to read. If you can read at a 5th grade level, for example, I'm sure you can read this just fine. Probably the 45% that can't are illiterate (for instance in developing areas of the world).

 

Scrambled-English literacy research in the developing world, huh? Might be safe to assume the percentages come from the literate, English-speaking pool of world inhabitants. Plus, the population of the developing world is large enough to offset the 55:45 ratio by a greater margin.

I also wouldn't imagine those who cannot read the 'test' will openly admit to such. But hey, for what it's worth, I usually cannot see the images in those crazy posters/pics where it is a design with a hidden image you have to stare at for awhile to see.
