Burj Dubai
Incredible project. More than 146 stories high.
Taller even than the fictional "glass tower" depicted in the film The Towering Inferno.

Ever since i've moved to Dubai back in 1999.. it's been pure madness down here
from the Burj Al Arab, to the Dubai Internet City, Ski Dubai, Dubai mall (largest mall outside the united states), the Palm Island, and Burj Dubai.
the list is endless.. and in a way kinda makes up for the CRAP weather we have here (we had 4 months of 60-75F.. and now in a month's time temperatures will glide upwards of 110-120F till mid October

well.. they're trying HARD to put their name up on the map.. and they're doing rather good IMO.
i work in the IT/Telecommunication sector so the real estate boom is of no use to me ( i only get to pay higher rents every year! )
Dubai certainly doesn't fit in this part of the world

How are they towards westerners over there? Is it a "safe" country to travel to?
I would imagine that if oil was no longer a viable commodity for them, they'd be SOL. Do they have other resources or economic growth sectors planned for the future that they can fall back on?

with the majority of the workforce in the construction and development being from the indian sub-continent.
Large corporations chose Dubai as their regional HQ such as Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, IBM, etc..
there are tens of thousands of american and european residents living in Dubai for years.
it's quite a metropolitan place, and pretty neutral politically so knock on wood.. it's been pretty calm here despite the madness around

As someone mentions on skyscraperpage.com, I have read reports on the Japan airport (Kensei) that was/is sinking but I haven't heard anything substantial on the Dubai island projects.
