5.3 just east of Riverside, with a small 2.0 in Newport Beach. The 5.3 apparently shook the area up pretty good.

Anyone feel it (I got calls from home and colleagues)?

Get ready for The Big One II!

Big one? Um...those are more than likely aftershocks from the 7.0 earlier this week.

If anything, SoCal is better off now because pressure has been relieved. My $0.02.

Um...aftershocks that size (5.0+) are only a 10% probability. Also, there was 5.2 last week out in that same area - BEFORE the 7.2 up north. That 5.2 was followed by the 7.8 in Chile, then a 6.8 in Alaska.

I agree, the more smaller ones we have the better off we'll be.

Yeah, nothing could possibly happen.

And, anyway, we're all immortal, right?

I was in Mervyns when I felt the aftershock, peoples reactions are priceless.
Was all the weird weather we've had for the past year or two any indication of huge earthquakes, or was that not related to it. I heard that from someone a while back.

I don't think "wierd" weather has anything to do with techtonics. <_<

When I see the wall of locusts come and the sun goes beet red, then I'll worry.

I keep hearing the 'weather' thing too, but whenever it's mentioned, there is a quake. I still think it's co-inky-dink, but it's becoming a pattern

What strange weather phenomena are you referring to?

I can tell you for sure that things ARE strange just before a quake.

My cats get hinky... real skittish, and whiney. The birds quiet down. Bugs come to the surface. I sit on the coast, and it was DEAD STILL. Growing up, when it was VERY still, and the animals acting funky, we always expected a quake. We were never disappointed, within 24 hours, we would get hit, always by something bigger than 3.0.

Yesterday, I was sitting at my desk, working away. I looked out my window, watched the coast for a min. My cats had been yelling for a couple minutes, but I was ignoring them. I had just thought to myself, "hmmm, pretty flat out there, no wind." I looked at my computer clock, and felt the ground move. Looked outside, waiting for the truck to come past, then it kept going, and no traffic. Thought it was gonna get bigger, and so, I made my way to the door. It was over in 5 seconds.

I am sure it doesnt make sense, and most people will call BS on the "earthquake weather" theory, but, being a Native Californian, I have seen proof of it.

I lived on the fault line, within 10 miles of the epicenter of the Oct '87 quake. The night before was totally freaky. We sat up listening to all the dogs barking, and that was all you could hear.

Tuesday nite, I told my husband, "we are going to have another one, within the next 7 days, at least 5.0" I left my kid with her dad up in the hills of OC, because I KNEW it was going to happen.

I wonder what the new coastline will look like when California falls off in the ocean?

*Please note the jester above as I know this will not happen.*

I've experienced earthquakes in Japan and California, and there is something weird about the weather before one hits. But I'll take a shaker any day over a tornado or a hurricane!

Has anybody read "The Last Days of the Late Great State of California"? It's an old book but contains a very scary description of a major quake.

Pretty much what my wife says - it gets very still and humid (humidity not so common here). I never notice it, but she seems to make the call accurately.

I wouldn't be surprised though - earthquakes are more than just little shakes in the ground.

Actually, you're not far from the truth. I learned in my Natural Hazards class in school that California is moving closer to Alaska evey year. But then again, you and I will be long, long dead when that happens.
