With the ZL-1 out, what will the Z/28 be?
Apparently, GM says they're still planning a Z/28 in addition to the just announced ZL-1. The question, which they still seem to be wrestling with, is just what should the Z/28 be?
The Boss 302 is an obvious target, at least in concept of being a track ready road racer. What would that mean for a Z/28 though. Some ideas:
Motor: Perhaps some version of the LS7 motor out of the Vette Z06. Maybe ditch the dry sump and some other bits to make it a bit more affordable, but keep its high-revving nature and power around the 500 mark to keep make it a match in both character and straightline performance to the Boss 302.
Drivetrain: ZL-1 here with perhaps a bit tighter, track ready gearing.
Chassis: ZL-1 is a good model here, but focus maybe a bit more on weight reduction where possible. Make it as sharp as a carbon steel cold chisel.
Interior: Toned down, trimmed up and toss in a decent steering wheel, shifter and a set of Recaros too.
Design/Graphics: keep them toned down a bit, this is a serious road rat not some gaudy boulevardier. Have everything connote a serious performance machine, nothing overtly superfluous.
Price: What's the Boss 302 going for?

The Boss 302 makes and excellent conceptual model. While the pushrod LS motors in the GM parts bins would necessitate a larger displacement than the higher tech, 4V DOHC Boss 5.0, the LS7 is still a revvy screamer and perhaps a slightly toned down and affordable version of this, making around 475hp, would be an apt mill.

I Have No Life
It'll be MIA
I think they are in the same mindset Ford was...whether caving from feedback on the internet or internally...
...don't bring the name back unless you have something worthy of the name.
Most people didn't want to see the Z28 as a 4000+lb fire breather... more like the BOSS302 track carver.
That's a LOT of weight to tame.
Wait till you can see what the 302/302LS can do ...
I don't think they'll attempt it until they see what it can do, **** themselves, and then decide to wait until they have a lighter vehicle.
