Z/28 confirmed?
Camaro ZL1 is the new hot model in Chicago
Interesting, looks like the next hot Camaro will be called the ZL1, powered by the supercharged 6.2 motor.
Interesting in that this will seem to match up with the GT500 and leaving room in the lineup between the ZL1 and SS for, what, a Z28 to match up with the new Boss 302? GM could certainly stick a version of the Vette Z06's LS7 motor in a stripped down, hard core Camaro to readily come up with a Z28 to go toe-to-toe with the Boss.

Pics on Camaro5

I dig it
Back end is much improved with the new lower valance. The quad exhaust looks fantastic.
The nose is cool (wish the lower grill style was also used on the upper grille.)
The hood looks great. I dig the steering wheel and the motor.
IMO an improvement across the board.

Color me unimpressed. This thing still has another full calendar year before it hits the streets and it looks like it matches up with the current GT500.
Looks like they took a trick form Ford too to make the car look smaller with the black trim
EDIT: it also has EPAS and alcantara on the wheel.
I'm sorry I know this car will perform, but what about it is original? There is nothing that makes it special. Where is the soul?

Heres some media shots.
I must say fantastic photography and even better photoshop work. Although they need to remeber to delete thier paths from the JPG files.

550hp my ***!
They are just playing the field keeping it down until they know what they are up against...just watch.
5 bucks says they leave the Z28 package out until they have a car worthy of the road performance characteristics.
If they plan on coming after the BOSS, I don't see it possible for the price point of hitting an equal performance platform, not unless they go exotic materials to lighten the load, or until the lighter chassis next gen.
Can't just throw power at any car and expect it to perform.

That makes sense Boom. That's one of the reasons I was sayin I was unimpressed. 550hp for this car is kind of low all things considered. And considering what some of us already know about the next gen GT500 it wont be enough.
Nice, although I'm not totally convinced by the stacked front fogs. The new steering wheel and alcantara dash a BIG improvements though.
But still almost a year from production? Good grief

They showed the 2010 coupe 50 years earlier
Remember the Z28 (now ZL1) was shelved years ago. This car isn't new...they've been working on it for years.
I have no doubt they pitted it against current GT500...
but we all know what happens the LAST time they did that
Ever notice when a Mustang gets revealed, they don't really mention specific models in their presentations? You can't watch a Camaro presentation withouth them mentioning the Mustang by name. 'We outsold them with one model... yada yada'
Being gone for 7 years had NOTHING to do with THAT..hahah
If the Mustang was gone for 7 years, wtf do you think would happen when it came back?
Oh..and anyone see any weight total for the car?

It's not as simple as putting a set of tires on a car and calling it a day. There are other ride and handling aspects each vehicle has to prove out. So using your logic, why not just put Pirelli Corsa tires on all versions of the Mustang? Ride harshness, tire wear and suspension settings be damned, every Mustang will stick to the road no matter what.
BTW, the GT convertible does have the GY Supercar tires on it and I don't see it outperforming the Shelby convertible with the same tires. Those tires are not that great.

Y'know what when it comes to alignment settings they are all the same (per the 2011 serv. man.) except for the Shelby which probably has more to do with the GT500 sitting lower than either the GT or V6 (the V6 and GT dont sit low enough to increase camber that much).
There are (as you suggest) differences in the spring rates (including sway bars) and dampers but the thing I've found, other than roll rate, the springs and dampers really only made a whole helluva difference when I was flying around a bumpy road near or at triple digit speeds, granted they offer a way to tune the suspension so that each car has its own personality (ie less understeer), but to answer your question, the biggest difference between a GT and GT500 (power aside) are the tires when it comes to how each car actually grips the road.

You put that tire on the left on any of the current performance variants ( PP V6, Brembo GT, PP GT500) on a track that limits the extent to which the GT and GT500 can use thier power and speed and lap times will not be a whole lot different. I'm also willing to bet that even on a big track like VIR, making sure all 3 cars have the same type of tire and removing the speed limiter on the V6 will tighten up the difference in lap times between the V6, GT and GT500 by a good margin (as I recall each car is seperated by about 4 seconds).

Nice job on the brakes GM, 6 pot calipers on the front with two piece rotors and 4 pot calipers on the back. The piston count isn't a big deal nor the swept area of the rotors to me (probably needs those bigguns because the car weighs friggin 2 tons) but the fact that GM is using two piece rotors to help control unsprung weight along with the nice finished look of using probably brembo 4 pot rears.
Now about that supercharged engine and its cast pistons...
