I was reading about the old mustang II's how they used a smog pump...I am talking about the pre catalitic converter days...What did it do?

Also what did it do after the converter came out? Did it add air to the emissions to make it better?

If I recall, they pumped some fresh air high up in the exhaust stream to burn off unburned hydrocarbon. Basically just an air pump.
