Launching in Germany in June, the new Volkswagen Golf GTD is powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4 with 181 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, compared to the 2012 model’s 168 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and the 2013 Volkswagen GTI’s 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen conservatively predicts a 0-62 mph time of 7.5 seconds with a 143-mph top speed.

Too bad this car is not available in the USA. Probably because it's pretty pricey (29,000 euros or $38,000), but you get everything from the GTI plus the diesel engine.
My friend has a GTD Mk. 2 from the 1980s ... It's pretty sporty to drive and he's still averaging 55 mpg city.
