NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The Acura Integra is the favorite of car thieves, according to a report released Tuesday by a firm that tracks auto theft claims.

The report by CCC Information Services tracks theft claims for 2004 based on make and model year, and it found that one of every 200 registered 1999 Acura Integras was stolen last year, making it the most stolen model.

In addition, Integras from model years 1995 through 1998 took four of the other top 9 positions on the list. The 1994, 2000 and 2001 Integra models also make the top 20 list. The list ranks vehicles by the percentage of registered vehicles stolen, rather than by gross number of thefts.

"We cannot determine with absolute certainty the reason why thieves steal some vehicles over others, but we see trends in the data that provide interesting insight," said Carole Comstock, CCC's vice president of marketing and product management. "For instance, our data suggests some cars are stolen for the value of their parts, which may explain why we often see a 'clustering' effect with same make and model vehicles from sequential model years."

Comstock said a growing interest in street car racing could also be feeding the thieves demand for Integra.

The top 10 list is rounded out by the 1991 GMC V2500 at No. 4, the 2002 Audi S4 at No. 5 and the 1992 Mercedes-Benz 600 at No. 10.

The popularity of different Integra models with thieves made Acura the most stolen make of 2004, followed by Hummer, Land Rover, Daewoo and Honda.

The top three vehicle segments with the highest rate of theft rates in 2004 were the full size sport/utility Vehicles, such as the Cadillac Escalade; the upper midsize sedans, including the Integra; and the prestige luxury segment, such as Bentley and Mercedes Benz.

Interesting.
Biggest surprise to me is that Corrolla is not on the list.

It changes from year to year. The Honda Accord isn't on the list anymore either.

Tell me about it. My in-laws pay out the nose for their 97 Accord. They pay just about the same amount per month on their policy as I do on mine. Then again my father in law hasn't had the most luck with driving....

Hmm, I wonder what the insurance rates are on an Integra in Phoenix.

I think it has more to do with the outrageous prices that Honda puts on their parts. I heard it would cost around $60-$70k to build an Integra from scratch ordering all the parts from Honda.

Cars are typically worth 2 to 3 times their value in pieces when stolen.

I think James is on to something there, the Integra's may have a weak point that makes the vehicle an easier target than others. An achilles heel per se. Hopefully they can address that. This is certainly not a good list to be on.

Having owned one for several years, nothing comes to mind off the top of my head that would make them any easier to steal. I guess I should have locked my keys in it a few times in order to see how easy it is to break into!

Hmm... thanks for the insight Mark I guess it all depends on the your geographic area too. Like where I live in Wyomissing it isn't horrible but go down the road a bit to Reading and leave your car there overnight and it will be up on blocks in the morning.

That's kinda interesting to see that the Mustang or the Vette isn't on the list. I wonder why? Anyways, that's good news!

On the local TV news (Portland, OR) they tried the to spin the Integra being number one on the stolen car list by stating

"... the Integra is the most stolen because of their super fast engines which are in high demand due to street racers..."

yeah, think about the 03-04 cobra, 6k dollar motor (used), 2k dollar tranny, 2k dollar suspension, 600 dollar seats, 1k dollar wheels/tires, etc.

I am looking at this list, and I see the M Roadster. I was under the impression that so few were made, even if every single one was stolen, they would still not be enough to match up to stolen cars on regular production vehicles (and now that I think about it, throw in the M3, BMW 750, MB 600, etc.). Maybe I am just out in left field.

On second thought, make it right field.

Biggest surprise to me is that Corrolla is not on the list.
Corrollas don't have enough power to make it past the street corner before the cops get there. Though number 8 worries me. I'm getting an 03' Marauder. Geez, number 8? There were only 10,000 of the car made and it made number 8 on the list! I mean Integras were made by the millions but the Marauder still made it on the top ten, ouch. I have to keep mine outside too. Good thing I live in a gated community.

There is alot of people who steal the integras & install the GSR (because it's a really good engine) & or some people steal the car with that engine to sell the parts. I'm happy to see that the Mustang & Navigator are not on the list.

I think you two missed this key statement in the original post:

Mustang has PATS (passive anti-theft system) that ties the computer chip in the key to the control module, codes have to match to get ignition.

The thing that amazes me is that the Mercury Marauder made the list! Since it's based on % of production Im betting one old timer forgot which handicap spot he parked his Marauder in.
