I don't think it would ever pass, because the public outcry would be too great, but it something to be aware of.

the idea is being discussed here as well, but purely to reduce congestion, it would mean me paying £22 PLUS Fuel £13 ($40 + $24) a day to commute to work. It'd be time for a new job if that rule came in :bang:

Seems like it would real easy to get around, have your primary car that you drive daily and a pick up truck that you only use to take to the gas station and buy fuel. Put fuel in gas cans and fuel the daily driver when you get back home. When the fuel pumps reads how many miles the truck has gone, it will be considerably less than the actual miles you have driven.

Is it all the hybrids and electrics showing up on roads that is prompting this discussion? It would stink if this happened.

Actually I find this to be hilarious, California has always been so strict on environmental laws and emissions. Then they complain that they aren't getting enough revenue from gas taxes. Maybe they should start building things closer together rather than scattering everything, help reduce the commutes. Also backing off on the environmental agenda would help as well since all there environmental regulations lack any proof that they are in fact actually helping anything. L.A. is known for it's smog, they should offer incentives for people taking mass transit. There are enough roads in California, they just need to manage everything better. They're not the only ones, Texas thinks the only way to fix traffic congestion is to build more roads as well. Okay, jumping off my soapbox.

Yeah I read about this in car and driver sometime back in one of the editorial pages, it seems that the DOT of some of these states are worried that its funding is geting under cut by the high fuel efficent cars so now they have to look for another way to get money.

Its funny here in the hick state of CT I had to get a new license(only because my was going to expire!) and they use tomake everyone moving into the state take a driving written test(sometimes I swear they let blind people drive in this state!) and charged $40 for it, but because everyone was failing and having to take the test over and over again and paying the 40 bucks everytime, the state passed a law saying that was wrong to do. So now the DOT still wants that $40 bucks so they make me take a eye test taht takes 4 seconds and chares me $40 to do that instead of the test! Its complete crap! They seem to fix the roads, sometimes and yet still charge you all this money, what the heck are they doing with it?

the only thing that will help california drivers is if half of them died. Why do I say that? Because it takes me over an hour to drive 15 miles home from school half the time. If states really wanted to increase revenues they'd just charge 100 bucks to take the drivers license test. EVERYONE would still be forced to do it and despite some muttering and complaining people would still pay it.

btw the 57 to the 22 ramp stinks =/ for that matter the 22 stinks.

Not sure how other states work, but I have only taken one driver's license test and that was when I was 16, I am now 25, not sure that is much of a revenue, increasing the tax to renew license plates would work better.

In most cases, without getting any tickets or any moving violations, and you renew it before the expiration date you should never have to take another test. But even for just a renew here in CT it cost me 104 bucks!

Yes we do need more roads, up here in the NE we have 4 lane interstates that are carrying traffic that should be an 8 lane. But the problems is that society uses up all the tax money on crappy programs like ESL, and all the $%&#ing wic programs for women that have no jobs but continue to have kids! Sorry got off on a rant there!
