and Jon Kasse can tell you exactly what needs to be done.

Personally if I were on a 5 yr budget build, I'd get a coyote V8 build it up with a nice forged rotating assembly, port the hell out of the heads, bump the displacement to 5.8L put either phaser limiters or phaser eliminators in there and decide on what sort of forced induction I was going to use - roots, twin screw, centri or turbo. If your going with a centri or turbo you could top it off with the cobrajet intake for some added awesomeness and end up with 650hp+

It would be interesting to have a 351 pushrod in a newer mustang...

A 351 would be cool. Especially using the current crop of canted valve heads.

Talk about looking tiny though. Due to the need to fit the 5.4sc the S-197 engine bay just swallows anything smaller than a Boss 429.

Put an LS variant in it, people are putting them in everything else.

Yea, A bored and stroked 351 Windsor engine sure would look good in a car like that. The big thing is it should be easy to get some good flowing headers for it and you probably have a greater choice of aluminum heads than there are for even a small block chevy. Look at the combinations of the winning small block Ford engines built for PHR Engine Masters contest for ideas as to what combination to build.
